Action plan
1. CAREER ACTION PLAN
MY AIM IS: My aim is to graduate from my biomedical science a minimum of a 2:2 so i can progress into
joining the NHS scientist training programme so I can then progress into doing my dream job which is
becoming a haematologist.
Target Date to complete this step ✔
Step 1.
Specific : My aimis to become a fully qualified haematologist
within 6 years of graduating and be able to secure a job in a well
known establishment such as the NHS. 2027
Step 2.
Measurable: I will know I have achieved my aim when i have
completed my biomedical science course, NHS scientist training
programme, and get at least 1 year of experience in the
haematology field and finally landing my first legitimate
haematologist role.
Biomedical science degree: 2021
NHS scientist training programme:
2024
Work experiences : 2026
Fully qualified haematologist: 2027
Step 3.
Achievable:
I believe that I can achieve my aimwithin my time period if I put
the time and effort. After graduating I will apply for the NHS
Scientist training programme and hopefully be accepted first time
which will then last 3 years in which I will specialise in
haematology. I will then try with the best of my ability to get at
least 1 year of experience in the field even if it is unpaid. I have
set myself a goal of achieving my aim within 6 years of
graduating. This is so if there is any failure of me getting into the
NHS scientist training programme and if i find it hard to find get
experience I need.

2024
Work experiences : 2026
Fully qualified haematologist: 2027
I will achieve this using the following SMART steps:
(Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant)
2. Step 4.
Relevant:
My love for haematology was discovered during my time in
university specifically in the lab day. Before joining the
biomedical course I did not know what to do after I graduated,
however, doing lab days and shadowing in the haematology and
oncology department at Sheffield Children's Hospital wanted to
get into haematology even more. My aim is very relevant to my
career plan as it is the quickest way to become a hematologist.
Biomedical science degree: 2021
NHS scientist training programme:
2024
Work experiences : 2026
Fully qualified haematologist: 2027
Step 5.
Time:
I aimto complete my aim 6 year after graduating or less if
everything goes to plan such as graduating first time, getting into
the NHS scientist training programme and getting enough
experience in the field to become a fully qualified haematologist.
even though the time period is challenging it is also attainable of i
put the right amount of effort, determination and motivation.

NHS scientist training programme:
2024
Work experiences : 2026
Fully qualified haematologist: 2027
What problems am I likely to face?
Common problems that i may face are getting accepted into the NHS scientist training programme which would
mean i would have to apply again with better application the next year in which i can do some voluntary work in
that time to have a better CV.
Another problem I face is after graduating from the NHS scientist training programme I may not find a
hematologist job straight away.
There also might not be any available voluntary work or jobs available at the time as this role is very competitive
which is another problem that can happen.
What will I do to overcome these and what help/support is available?
Having an excellent CV, application, cover letter and being ready for the NHS scientist training programme
interview all can increase the likelihood of getting into the course first time.
Having a couple of years of experience in the field can really help when applying for haematology roles which is
one way of having the upper hand over other candidates. The more years of experience the higher the chance of
getting the job.
Personally I do not mind working anywhere as long as it haematology based. This means I'm willing to move
cities and countries which a lot of people do not consider. This allows me to have a better chance of getting both
experience and my aim target of becoming a fully qualified haematologist.
