3. Dealing with an Aching Neck
• 1 in 10 Americans deals with cervical spine
pain, or an aching neck, on a regular basis.
• In this presentation, we’ll talk about the
causes and common treatments for neck pain.

4. What Causes Neck Pain?
• Neck pain can be caused by many things.
• Common causes of an aching neck include
degenerative disc disease, a herniated disc,
whiplash, neck strain, pinched nerves,
infections, fibromylagia, and polymyalgia
rheumatica, among others.
• Neck pain can be the result of injury, accident,
disease, infection, or a chronic condition.
• Unfortunately, in some cases the cause of an
aching neck can be difficult to pinpoint.

5. How Can You Treat It?
• Neck pain is treated based on the suspected cause.
• If your doctor believes your neck pain is the result of an
injury such as whiplash, immobilization and treatment
with pain killers may be advised.
• In general, neck pain is often treated by either hot or
cold therapy, local injections of cortisone or anesthetics,
topical pain relievers, and in some cases, or surgery.
• Some rest may be all that is needed in some cases.
Alternative treatments include acupuncture and jacuzzi
treatment.
• Massage, physical therapy, and the use of devices such
as neck pillows or soft cervical collars may be employed
as well.

6. When Should You See a Specialist?
• If you are suffering from neck pain, it is
generally a good idea to see your doctor.
• An aching neck may be the result of just
sleeping wrong for a night or two, but if it
recurs, it may signify something more serious.
• Any neck pain that is so severe that it restricts
movement should be evaluated immediately.
• If you experience other symptoms in addition
to your neck pain, you should also see your
physician.

7. What Other Symptoms Can Be Caused
By an Aching Neck?
• Depending on the root cause, they may be accompanied by
numerous other symptoms.
• Infections that cause an aching neck may also lead to
swollen lymph nodes, difficulty swallowing, and fever,
among other symptoms.
• If you have an injury or your neck pain is caused by a
herniated disc or degenerative disc disease, you might be
experiencing numbness, tingling, or shooting pain in areas
affected by the nerves which lead to your neck.
• Many people with aching necks experience symptoms like
hearing swishing sounds, earaches, migraines, facial pain,
temporary or partial paralysis of one or both arms,
dizziness, or feeling lightheaded.

8. Will My Neck Pain Go Away On Its
Own?
• Sometimes neck pain needs no treatment.
Other times, you may require aggressive or
surgical treatment in order to find relief.
• If your neck pain is severe and seems like it isn’t
getting better, don’t wait for it to cure itself.
