Aviation contributes 2% of global carbon emissions currently, projected to grow to 3% by 2050. IATA has adopted a four pillar strategy to achieve carbon neutral growth for aviation: technology, operations, infrastructure, and economic instruments. The goal is for 25% lower carbon intensity by 2020 through more efficient aircraft and alternative fuels, and ultimately zero carbon emissions in the future through cross-industry cooperation including governments under ICAO facilitation. Carbon offsets and emissions trading could play a role if properly designed through ICAO. Continuous improvement and cooperation across industries will be crucial to address aviation's climate impact.
