This chapter introduces basic medical terminology used in healthcare. It discusses the four elements used to analyze and construct medical terms: prefixes, suffixes, root words, and combining vowels. Correct terminology includes proper spelling, pronunciation, and use of prefixes, suffixes, and root words. Prefixes are placed at the front of a term and can be common or indicate number. Suffixes are at the back and also include common suffixes. Root words provide the meaning and often refer to body parts or systems. Combining vowels help blend the meanings between elements. Medical documents contain a patient's history, diagnoses, procedures, and must be kept confidential.
