This document summarizes the key insights and prototypes developed by a design team to help low-income parents, especially single mothers, overcome barriers and ensure their children thrive. The team identified challenges like a lack of time, education, finances, and emotional support. Their prototypes included a brochure and resource map to help mothers access support services, as well as role plays and an investor pitch outlining a proposed program called "Am I?" that would provide self-sufficiency training and help mothers navigate community resources. Next steps discussed testing the prototypes with professionals and securing necessary staff, partners, and funding to implement the program.

A common problem that exists within the civic engagement framework of most college campuses is that the same individuals accomplish a majority of the service work over time. This workshop is the second session of a three-part training that aims to give strategies and develop service leaders’ ability to recruit volunteers for local non-profit organizations. This second session focuses on analyzing the resources and connections that students have in a web of influence and developing a recruitment plan to fulfill the volunteer needs of the non-profit organization as determined in the previous session.

During this talk I will highlight my personal favorites of the Google Analytics datasets and how to find them. There are potential gold mines in there; you just have to get to know them. In this way, that data is your friend. The more you get to know data, the more you’ll understand it, be annoyed by it, love it, hate it. The data will tell you something’s (horribly) wrong, but only if you ask for it. With each dataset I highlight, I will show you the common mistakes we see at Yoast and what kind of data that would lead to. Using my knowledge in psychology I’ll explain how to prevent or (partially) solve these issues and why and how these “”solutions”” will work. Psychology will bring you understanding of your potential customers. It will guide you out of, or away from, the woods, as would a mentor.

Application: Special Needs From a Variety of Perspectives
Throughout this course, you will be studying many topics related to children with special needs. The readings, content reviews, and Discussions will help you gain a valuable base of information. To expand your knowledge, the course Applications will offer ways to explore areas of special needs in more depth and increase your awareness of what it is like to teach and to parent a child with special needs, or to be someone who has been identified with a special need.
Before you begin the Week 1 Application, review the outline below in order to plan effectively.
Week 1: Write a Brochure on Early Intervention Services.
You will imagine yourself in the role of a Child Development Community Liaison for a nonprofit organization that provides programs related to infant/toddler healthy development. Your job is to create a brochure for infant/toddler program directors and caregivers informing them about your services.
Week 2: Interview with a Teacher or Caregiver.
You will have a choice of interviewing a teacher whose expertise is special education and who works with children ages 3–8, or a teacher or caregiver who has a child or children in his/her setting who have been identified with special needs.
Week 3: Research and Information Exchange, Part 1.
You will research a category of special needs that is of interest to you in order to gain a greater depth of knowledge.
Week 4: Research and Information Exchange, Part 2.
You will share, review, and reflect on fellow students' research on different categories of special needs.
Week 5: Interview with a Parent of a Child with Special Needs or with a Student or Adult with Special Needs.
You will have a choice of interviewing a parent or other close adult family member of a child with special needs, or a person with special needs who would like to share his or her experiences and perspectives.
Week 1: Write a Brochure on Early Intervention Services
As you have learned this week, early intervention services can include programs for infants and toddlers who may be at risk from biological or environmental issues that could lead to developmental delays or other special needs. One challenge to early intervention service providers is to ensure that they reach out and connect with families. All of the various types of infant and toddler programs in a community, including family day care homes, Early Start, faith-based programs, community organizations, can play an important role in connecting families to available early intervention services.
For your Application Assignment this week, imagine that you have been hired as a Child Development Community Liaison for a community organization called The Guidance Center Inc. In reality, this respected, not-for-profit organization serves the communities of Cambridge and Somerville in Massachusetts. As part of The Guidance Center's Early Childhood Services for ages 0–6 , their Infant-Toddler Services include four p.

WELCOME!
Our mission is to empower individuals and communities to fulfill their own
purpose and potential by fostering cultures of literacy
OUR MISSION
We are a community of changemakers who believe all people have the ability
to learn and grow to their full potential. We are working to build a culture of
learning that equips every person to be a change agent in their own story and
community.
Through education, we are making a deliberate, sustainable, and substantial
impact on the structural inequalities in our world, while treating each person
as more than a number. We believe in authentic interactions grounded in
mutual respect and a commitment to helping everyone fully realize their
potential and inspire action beyond our efforts.

The problem
At PANGEA, we focus on educational development and empowerment through literacy. Our approach to literacy
development requires a focus within and across each sphere of a child’s life: in school, at home, and in the community.

Week 4 Assignment Developing Relationships
Community relationships are important in school success. Schools are often at the center of community activity and can be a significant source of pride to a community. Creating and sustaining this positive relationship is part of every educator’s work. This is especially true in communities where tax levy elections support the school. Establishing positive community relationships is the right thing to do. When people in the community work together on behalf of students, great things can happen. Part of establishing positive community relationships is “getting the message out” about the good things the school is doing in/for the community.
For this assignment, you are to take the part of a teacher who has been invited to speak for 10-15 minutes to a community group (your choice) to discuss the school, what students are doing in/for the community, and how the community can best support the school and its students.
Your presentation should be creative, engaging, and media focused. You may use the presentation software of your choice (Power Point, Present Me, Prezi, etc.). The length of the presentation should be sufficient to cover a 10-15 minute presentation. It is not necessary to use reference materials, but any reference materials cited should be cited/referenced according to APA as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. Please be sure to include speaker’s notes in your presentation.
Carefully review the Grading Rubric (Links to an external site.) for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.
INSTRUCTOR GUIDANCE
WEEK FOUR
*Special thanks to Dr. Patrice Jones for sharing her original guidance in this document.
Did you know there is a National African American Parent Involvement Day (NAAPID) that takes place in schools across the country in the month of February? Inspired by a speech during the Million Man March in 1995 that challenged all the men in the crowd to give back to their community, Michigan school Principal Joseph Dulin initiated this movement as a day of events encouraging parents to get more involved in their child's school. “It comes during Black History Month,” explains Dulin, “and I thought it was a tremendous time to introduce it as a project for parents to get into our schools to exchange notes, phone numbers, emails, have conversations and get in touch with the teachers” (Cavanaugh, 2016, para. 6).
Although the day is geared toward African American parents, the schools encourage every parent to participate for a common goal of promoting parent involvement, eliminating the achievement gap, and creating partnerships among stakeholders. Hugh Price, retired CEO of the National Urban League and founder of Campaign for African-American Achievement, explains that "community norms have traditionally played a particularly central role in the lives of black Americans" (Price, 2008, p. 19). A variety of students from different cultural backgrounds benefit from the ...

Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.

2. What barriers do parents in low-income communities
face in ensuring that their children thrive?
● General resources provided via school/church/community, but not explained in-depth
● Lack of education to improve their career/help their children with school work
● Limited finances to provide for their family
● Limited time from working multiple jobs
● Trauma/stress the parent/child(ren) might be dealing with, due to external factors
3. Themes
After our initial rounds of brainstorming in the ideation phase, we focused
on the key themes that echoed throughout our various interviews. We
were able to extract the following takeaways as potential solutions to the
problems faced by low-income parents, especially single mothers:
● Providing outlets/spaces for children to play
● Allowing single mothers to have their own, personal time
● Access to resources tailored specifically to the family’s needs
● Educational/career opportunities made available to single-mothers,
and possible incentives for them to take advantage of these
opportunities
● One-on-One support provided from a trusted member in the
community
4. Insight Statements
One-on-one interactions are challenges faced by the community because:
● Mothers do not have time to dedicate to their child(ren) because of working multiple jobs, negative
external influences, inability to find support, or cannot meet their own needs (emotional, financial,
etc.)
● Volunteers/mentors do not have time to provide mentorship because of own priorities, limited time,
and commitment
● Teachers do not have time because providing attention to all children, including those with special
needs/disabilities
Self-sufficiency/confidence of moms are challenges faced by the community because:
● Moms are not educated due to background, accessibility to education, priority of education
● Moms do not have a sustainable income
● Moms do not have emotional stability or space for self
Emotional interaction for the child are challenges faced
by the community because:
● There is no physical place dedicated for play because
of home living situation, education system
● Time because of parent’s time/priorities
● Resources for children

Goals and Outcomes Statement
Your goals are our goals. The focus is on you: what do you intend to accomplish? A trusted community expert will help
you figure out what goals you want to set, and work out a plan to achieve them, on your terms, and in your own time.
The takeaway of our program is left entirely up to you. Do you need more information on what resources are available
for you financially? Do you need support for taking care of your children? Once we know what you need, we’ll help you
make a plan to get to where you want to be. From there, our hope is that we have provided you with the tools needed to
be independent.

Role Play
AMI is hosting a table at a city health fair. One member acted as a mom approaching the table, the other acted as an
AMI volunteer. The table is covered in the AMI theme colors, with our pamphlets and information accessible. We
offer small beauty care packages (to reinforce the “confidence” aspect of the organization) and provide a large “AM I”
excercise board for mothers to play with and share on their social media.
The discussion centered on the “pitch” and the volunteer worked to engage the mother by providing flexible options
and rewards for joining the program. We came up with an option to overcome the "I am too busy" issue: Using our
parent idea to offer the morning joe and nightcap meeting options at the client's home.
Insights
1. The role play was used to identify areas where the roadmap could include a "flagship" program, with a
number of "arms" for different services we might offer.
2. By asking the right questions, we realized the level of detail needed in the full service offerings of the program.
Things discussed as a result of the role play:
1. We decided there needs to be a flagship program because otherwise the organization as a whole has the "it's
already been done" feel. What makes this idea unique?
2. Does it need greater structure (e.g. more focus on the group/class settings), or less structure (e.g. highest
focus on individualized attention and flexibility for time)
3. How can we reframe it so that the class seems more like a flexible benefit?
10. Prototype
Investor Pitch:
Am I? is a comprehensive development program in which low income mothers build self-confidence and knowledge
about resources available to them within their community for building a sustainable family life. Parenting on it’s own is
highly demanding and time consuming, in order to help mothers balance their family commitments we provide them
with information and resources in regards to career planning, finances, life skills, home management, parenting, and
self-care.
Currently, we are in need of funding that will help us to staff our team, and to provide for our basic administrative and
community reaching resources. Once we receive this initial funding we hope to create sustainability through grant
writing and bidding on government contracts. Together, with your help, we can help ensure low-income families are
utilizing existing resources both in the community and from within
11. Testing
To test our prototype, we engaged with professionals with years of experience working in section 8 homeless shelters
that are currently doing much of of the skill building and financial planning offerings in AMI.
What the professional offered was refining options for the actual exercises that AMI Volunteers might want to be trained
in, and try out.
1. How to relate culturally.
2. How to relate through games at each class meeting.
3. How to thoroughly navigate existing bureaucratic and financial (for the 501c) obligations and issues.
4. How to structure the boundaries for a mother/parent to participate in an AMI class.
5. How to leverage knowledge from participants to make AMI a “self teaching” process for the parents.
6. General ideas for class or individual exercises (teaching interviewing techniques and resume writing, using
games to teach budget building).
12. Next Steps
In turning to the implementation stage, our team has considered the support staff, partners, and funding we would need
to get our idea off the ground. Required staff include:
● A project manager to coordinate staff and operational activity
● An outreach coordinator to connect with people in the larger community and build partnerships
● A grant writer and development officer to drive the program’s growth
● A volunteer coordinator to train volunteers in the program’s services and to develop their mentoring skills
● An event planner to plan appearances at health fairs
● Volunteers interested in serving as mentors
To effectively accomplish our goals, we would need to engage local partners, who can advocate for our services and
provide resources that many of these mothers need. We would look to secure partnerships with local establishments,
including:
● Small Businesses
● Government Organizations
● Churches
● Schools
● Community Clinics
