Accessibility Policy
1. Accessibility Service Policy
Kimbel Library staff strives to provide all students, faculty & staff, and community
patrons with equal access to information for their research needs. The goal of our staff is
to provide services that encourage the use of our facility and collections.
Patrons with disabilities shall have access to Kimbel Library’s resources and services
comparable to that which is extended to all other patrons.
Accessibility
Accessible parking for Kimbel Library is available in the parking lot on the south end of
the building between Wheelwright Auditorium and Kearns Hall, in front of the building
in the Horseshoe, and in back in the area adjacent to Lib Jackson Student Center and
Spadoni Park. All have wheel chairs ramps and sidewalks. The front entrance and exit to
the library have automatic doors.
An elevator provides wheelchair access to the 2nd
floor. The study rooms, main stacks,
media collection, and student-assisted computer lab are all wheelchair accessible.
Accessible restrooms are available on both floors.
Services
Kimbel Library recognizes that special assistance is needed by some to independently
utilize the collection and resources. The library staff will make reasonable
accommodations to equalize services at the time of request; however, we may require
advance notice to make full use of some of the resources.
Reference Services and Adaptive Technology
The reference librarians of Kimbel Library provide assistance to patrons in identifying
and locating materials and information. Reference service includes instruction on the use
of materials and assistance with research. Librarians make every attempt to provide
service while on duty at the reference desk. Access Services staff has been trained to
provide assistance at times when reference librarians may not be available. The Ask-a-
Librarian service (http://www.coastal.edu/library/askalibrarian.html) is available 24 hours
a day, 7 days a week through email and online chat. Staff will reply within 48 hours.
Please call 843-349-2414 for more information about reference assistance.
Coastal Carolina University owns adaptive technology for patron use. On the 2nd
floor of
the library, in the “quiet” computer room, is the Merlin LCD video magnifier. On the 1st
floor, across from the reference desk, is the visually enhanced and wheel chair accessible
desktop.
2. Access Services
The Access Services staff recognizes that special assistance is sometimes required to
retrieve materials. Depending on the number of staff working at a given time, a request
may be fulfilled immediately. If a limited number of staff is working, materials will be
paged at the earliest possible time, and the patron notified when it is ready.
Self-service copiers are available all hours that the library is open. If assistance is
needed, any staff member or student assistant is more than willing to provide instruction.
Cost is $0.10 per page. Only black & white is available.
Printing services are available from all desktops in the library, and directly from the
Library owned laptops. Printouts may be sent to the Access Services desk on the 1st
floor, or to the Student Computing Services Lab located on the 2nd
floor. Cost is $0.05
per sheet.
For more information, please contact the Access Services department by calling 843-349-
2400 or emailing access@coastal.edu.
