Academic Motivation that Prevents Educational FailureBy: Tasha Hayes
Problem StatementIn times when a education is so important how can we motivate our youth to stay in school and away from drugs and guns?
ProblemNearly one in five U.S. men between the ages of 16 and 24 (18.9 percent) were dropouts in 2007.Nearly three of 10 Latinos, including recent immigrants, were dropouts (27.5 percent).More than one in five blacks dropped out of school (21 percent). The dropout rate for whites was 12.2 percent.Nearly 6.2 million students in the United States between the ages of 16 and 24 in 2007 dropped out of high school, fueling what a report released Tuesday called "a persistent high school dropout crisis.“Education
Significance of the Study?"Americans without a high school diploma have considerably lower earning power and job opportunities in today's workforce. Over a working lifetime from ages 18-64, high school dropouts are estimated to earn $400,000 less than those that graduated from high school.Due to their lower lifetime earnings and other sources of market incomes, dropouts will contribute far less in federal, state and local taxes than they will receive in cash benefits, in-kind transfers and correctional costs. Over their lifetimes, this will impose a net fiscal burden on the rest of society.adults with high school diplomas contribute major fiscal benefits to the country over their lifetime. The combined lifetime fiscal benefits -- including the payment of payroll, federal, and state income taxes --- could amount to more than $250,000 per graduated student

Ways to Motivate Students to Stay in School- Counseling and Peer GroupsRandom student drug testing (RSDT) is a drug prevention activity that helps deter students from taking illegal drugs. If students are aware of this program, and they and their parents voluntarily sign an agreement regarding RSDT, they have a big incentive to stay drug-free.On the other hand, students who refuse to volunteer can fall under mandatory testing (like student drivers and athletes). If they are found to be using illegal drugs, then the RSDT still manages to accomplish one goal of pinpointing drug users and getting them the help they need.Motivation
Students can be motivatedThe song and video was an assignment to encourage students not to let peer pressure affect their education and make it to their high school graduation in 2014. Students were put on behavior contracts and as long as they stayed out of trouble, their teacher would allow them to perform their song at the graduation ceremony.Motivation
