This study assessed the knowledge and opinions of nurses and persons with physical disabilities regarding healthcare for persons with disabilities in two private healthcare services in Kimberley, South Africa. A questionnaire was administered to 215 nurses and 100 persons with disabilities. The results found that nurses identified a lack of equipment to assist persons with disabilities as a barrier to care. Persons with disabilities viewed this as a shortcoming impacting the quality of care received. Both nurses and persons with disabilities recognized problems and barriers faced by persons with disabilities in accessing healthcare. The conclusion is that by addressing equipment and other shortcomings, nurses could provide more holistic care to persons with physical disabilities.
