Make Media Matter: Using Social Media to Spread Human Rights AwarenessJustine Abigail
It seems that more and more, ordinary citizens all around the world are using social media tools like blogs, YouTube, and Twitter to reach out to a global audience to report on and expose the rampant human rights violations that are occurring every single day. But it is all too easy for us to be swept away by this new frontier, overly confident of what it is capable of. We must proceed with caution and with a conscious mind. Join Journalists for Human Rights during Social Media Week where we hope to educate and inform the technologically savvy and globally conscious citizen of how to effectively and, more importantly, responsibly share, tweet, or blog of issues that deal with human rights in a way that will encourage an ongoing dialogue.
This document discusses how social media is used around the world, particularly in developing countries. It provides perspectives from four experts on both the benefits and limitations of social media in developing contexts. Key points made include that social media allows for widespread sharing of information, helps with communication and co-creation, but also has issues like only certain groups gaining attention and potential government monitoring. Overall, while social media provides opportunities, it is only a tool and not a full solution for development challenges.
This document discusses strategies for using media to promote social justice and resistance. It focuses on how communities can strengthen democracy through digital media. Some key points discussed include:
- The potential for electronic media to enable more deliberative democracies and civic engagement.
- The concept of "mediated communities" and reimagining strategies for social change through media in the face of barriers.
- Examples of issues in Miami related to race, geography, and media narratives including the lack of internet access in Liberty City neighborhoods.
- The importance of choosing issues related to social justice, providing critical context through scholarship, and engaging in media production and dissemination to build awareness.
This honors thesis argues that development organizations should adopt "Livelihood Facilitation" approaches to more effectively reduce poverty by addressing the priorities of the poor. The author uses Ernesto Sirolli's Enterprise Facilitation model as an example of a people-centered, microeconomic approach that focuses on providing direct investment and economic opportunities to the poor through livelihood assistance, rather than indirect support through policies, health, and education. However, livelihood projects also need to integrate the poor into local and global production networks to empower rather than create dependency. The solution to poverty lies in supporting the existing assets and strengths in communities by removing obstacles and enabling entrepreneurship, partnerships, and investment over aid and handouts.

Social movements aim to work toward a common social goal of creating change. They can occur at local, state, national, and global levels. Sociologists identify different types of social movements based on the level of change sought, from reform to revolutionary. Social movements also typically progress through stages from preliminary awareness to institutionalization or decline. Recent technological advances have transformed how social movements organize through social media, allowing rapid awareness and organizing across large networks. However, critics argue social media only increases superficial participation rather than deeper engagement. Theories seek to explain success of social movements through concepts like resource mobilization, framing of issues, and alignment of different movement goals.

Roberson-Pornography as a Health Issue- 3/28/24Tom Tresser
Pornography is negatively impacting mental health, especially in youth. Prolonged viewing can lead to unrealistic expectations of sex, increased risky behavior, and negative body images in teens. It can also normalize rape myths and increase rates of depression in adults. Without addressing this issue, more youth will be exposed and affected long term by pornography. The document proposes a Porn Addicts Anonymous support group similar to Alcoholics Anonymous to help those struggling without stigma.

How to Make a Field Mandatory in Odoo 17Celine George
In Odoo, making a field required can be done through both Python code and XML views. When you set the required attribute to True in Python code, it makes the field required across all views where it's used. Conversely, when you set the required attribute in XML views, it makes the field required only in the context of that particular view.
