The Centre of Indian Trade Union (CITU) was founded in 1970 and is affiliated with the World Federation of Trade Unions. It is one of the largest trade unions in India, with a strong presence in Tripura and West Bengal. CITU organizes various industrial federations, including plantation, steel, transport, coal, construction, road transport, electricity, and anganwadi workers. In 2019, CITU began celebrating 100 years of workers' struggles in India and 50 years of fighting for workers' unity. Trade unions

Indian national trade union congress
The Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) is the trade union affiliated with the Indian National Congress political party. It was founded on May 3, 1947, just months before India's independence. INTUC claims over 33 million members and is headquartered in New Delhi. It aims to promote workers' rights and interests, including securing living wages, improving working conditions, and obtaining social security measures. However, trade unions in India face challenges such as politicization compromising workers' interests and a large portion of the workforce remaining unorganized and unrepresented.
Organizing workers in informal economy
Organizing gives the poorest workers a voice to advocate for improvements to their lives. Informal workers are increasingly organizing into membership-based organizations (MBOs) where members elect leaders democratically. While many workers gained formal rights and unions in industrializing countries, many remained informal. Organizing among informal workers internationally has grown since the 1990s, starting with India's Self Employed Women's Association (SEWA) in 1972. MBOs allow informal workers to advocate to policymakers and effect positive change, empowering workers through collective action and representation.
Collective bargaining in tea industry
