The Holodomor in Ukraine occurred between 1932-1933. An estimated 4 million people were starved to death by the government. The themes of de-humanizing in order to justify deaths and words as euphemisms are similar to the abortion ideology in Canada. The connection to the Chernobyl miniseries is the phrase, we live in a country where children save their parents. A child will never ruin your life, a child will save your life.

In Ukraine, many scholars have depicted the Famine as a key
event in the national historical narrative, and in 2006 Ukraine’s

The Saskatchewan Government proclaimed a very unique act at the Legislature in
2008, The Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor) Memorial Day Act. It
reads: "The fourth Saturday in November in each year is declared to be "Ukrainian
Famine and Genocide (Holodomor) Memorial Day" for the purposes of recognizing
the Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor) of 1932-33 and of reflecting on
the lessons to be learned from that event."

13. Pop Culture Reference to the Holodomor in Chernobyl
The Holodomor is now pervasive in popular culture thanks to the success of Home Box Office’s mini-series,
Chernobyl. Episode 4 is entitled “The Happiness of All Mankind,” which is a reference to a Soviet propaganda
banner, “Our Goal is the Happiness of All Mankind.” In this episode, the opening scene shows an 82-year-old
woman refusing to follow a soldier’s orders.
“What do I care about safe?” she declares in her own defence. Then she lists all the times soldiers have stood
over her with guns, Czarist soldiers, Bolsheviks. “Then there was Stalin, and his famine. The Holodomor.” It’s a
sophisticated statement by writer Craig Mazin in this context of a nuclear catastrophe that inherits the lineage of
the Holodomor, another one of those “goals” that actually contributed to the collapse of the Soviet Union.

14. Holodomor, Chornobyl,
Abortion
To get an idea of how controversial it is to
mention the Holodomor in the context of
Chernobyl, or to look into the eyes of the daughter
of a Ukrainian soldier who has perished, seeing
the amazing similarities between her and the
“everyman” that Anatoli Haidamaka had in mind
when he designed the Holodomor monument, also
known as the “Girl with Stalks of Grain,” imagine
the following connection in our own Canadian
culture between the Holodomor and abortion.

15. 1. Where statistics bureaus registered deaths during the
Holodomor as death not from famine but from "digestive
ailment", our statistics count several types of abortions not
as the intentional destruction of innocent human life, but as
"stillbirths."
2. One of the lessons learned from the Ukrainian famine is
that language and law were manipulated to de-humanize
the Ukrainian farmer. Once it was declared that the
Ukrainian farmers were not human beings it became
possible to justify their deaths through famine.
3. Language and law have also been manipulated to de-
humanize the pre-born child. With pre-term labour
abortion, starvation is also a weapon as in the famine,
justified with the euphemism of palliative care.

16. A child will not ruin your life, but a child will save
your life, sometimes literally, as a line from
Chernobyl conveys: “They said the radiation
would have killed the mother but the baby
absorbed it instead… We live in a country where
children have to die to save their mothers.” The
image of a young girl has become the archetypal
statement of survival during the Holodomor; and a
child has immortalized her soldier-father’s self-
sacrifice.

17. Conclusion
As Malcolm Muggeridge, who wrote about both the famine and pro-life issues has
stated, "Either life is always and in all circumstances sacred, or intrinsically of no
account; it is inconceivable that it should be in some cases the one, and in some the
other."

18. “Reflecting on the lessons to be learned from that event,” as
suggested by the Government of Saskatchewan, might make
Canadians feel uncomfortable about policies of our own
government, provincial and federal. In the spirit of Taras
Shevchenko, however, honestly examining the implications
of the ideology that made the Holodomor possible means
making a completely human and humane commitment to
“those who have died, to those who are living, and to those
who will be born.”
