The Vizag gas leak was an industrial accident that occurred on May 7, 2020 at an LG Polymers chemical plant in Visakhapatnam, India. A styrene gas leak from the plant's storage tank affected over a 3km radius, killing 11 people and sickening over 1,000. The gas leak occurred when styrene monomer was not stored at the proper temperature, causing pressure to build up and the valve to break. Nearby residents, livestock, and crops were exposed to the toxic vapors. The incident highlighted the need for stricter safety protocols around gas storage and leak detection and prevention at chemical plants located near residential areas.
