Abraham Lincoln overcame many challenges throughout his life that demonstrated his courage and determination. As a young boy, he helped bury family members who had died and made long journeys alone. As a young man, he volunteered to help prevent Indian attacks despite the risks. As President during the Civil War, he freed slaves through the Emancipation Proclamation and worked tirelessly to abolish slavery and preserve the Union, even though he knew it could lead to violence. Lincoln's lifelong ambition was to end slavery and bring freedom to all people in the United States.
