ABCs of ServiceNow CMDB
ServiceNow CMDB (Configuration Management Database) is a fundamental component
that stores information about all the configuration items (CIs) within an organization's IT
infrastructure. Here's an overview of the ABCs of ServiceNow CMDB:
A - Attributes: These are the characteristics or properties of Configuration Items (CIs)
stored in the CMDB. Attributes include things like CI type, version, owner, location,
relationships, and more. These attributes help in defining and categorizing CIs within the
CMDB.
B - Business Service Mapping: ServiceNow CMDB allows for the mapping of IT
components to business services, providing a clear understanding of how IT services relate
to business functions. This mapping helps in identifying the impact of changes or issues on
specific business services.
C - CI Relationships: Understanding relationships between CIs is critical in ServiceNow
CMDB. It involves establishing connections and dependencies between various CIs, such as
how servers relate to applications or how network devices connect to each other. This
relationship mapping is crucial for impact analysis, change management, and problem
resolution.
D - Discovery: ServiceNow offers automated discovery tools that help populate and update
the CMDB with accurate and real-time information about the IT infrastructure. Discovery
tools scan the network to identify and collect data about hardware, software, and their
relationships, enriching the CMDB.
E - Enrichment: CMDB data can be enriched through various means, including manual
input, automated discovery, integrations with other tools, and continuous updates. Keeping
the CMDB enriched ensures that the information remains accurate and up to date.
F - Federated CMDB: In some complex environments, there might be multiple CMDBs
across different departments or locations. ServiceNow allows for the integration or

G - Governance: ServiceNow CMDB requires proper governance to maintain data accuracy,
reliability, and security. Governance includes defining roles and responsibilities,

compliance with policies and regulations.
H - Health and Compliance: CMDB health indicators help in assessing the accuracy and
completeness of CMDB data. Compliance checks ensure that the CMDB adheres to defined
standards, best practices, and regulatory requirements.
I - Impact Analysis: Understanding the impact of changes or incidents on CIs and
associated services is crucial. ServiceNow CMDB facilitates impact analysis by providing
insights into relationships and dependencies, aiding in risk assessment and decision-
making.

Here's an overview of the ABCs of ServiceNow CMDB: A - Attributes: These are the characteristics or properties of Configuration Items (CIs) stored in the CMDB. Attributes include things like CI type, version, owner, location, relationships, and more. These attributes help in defining and categorizing CIs within the CMDB. B - Business Service Mapping: ServiceNow CMDB allows for the mapping of IT components to business services, providing a clear understanding of how IT services relate to business functions. This mapping helps in identifying the impact of changes or issues on specific business services. C - CI Relationships: Understanding relationships between CIs is critical in ServiceNow CMDB. It involves establishing connections and dependencies between various CIs, such as how servers relate to applications or how network devices connect to each other. This relationship mapping is crucial for impact analysis, change management, and problem resolution.
