The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre was founded by Alvin Ailey in 1958 and is known for its iconic 1960 work "Revelations" and innovative modern dances that celebrated African American culture. After Ailey's death in 1989, Judith Jamison led the company for over 20 years and established The Ailey School in 1969 to train new dancers. The current artistic director Robert Battle continues Ailey's mission with the main company and Ailey II, while the organization shares performances and educational content online.
