Song Textual Analysis

The choice of the music of the music video
I picked a Chinese rock song called “ Pain Toast” as the music of my
music video. It basically tells a story of a relationship. Only after the
couple breaking up, one of them realized how special their relationship
was but it’s too late. The toast in French is called “Pain perdu”, the
band combine the“ French toast” and “Pain perdu”. Then the “ Pain
toast” was created. The metaphor of the name of the song is that
love&relationship are like the sweet part of French toast, however,
while you are enjoying it, you have to take the bitter crust too. It's not
only a toast, it's a “Pain” toast.
For the task I will analyze the lyrics of the music in order to understand
the music better so that I can express the feeling and atmosphere
better in my music video. It’s beneficial for acknowledging the song.
The original Chinese lyrics
The lyrics translated into English
The intro is basically the repetition of the key
words“ French toast” and “ Lemon-flavored
Seven-up”. The repetition of key words goes
with merge up beat melody. Also the French
cuisine are linked with love and romantic.
The difference between French toast and
regular toast is that the French toast is
sweeter. It is a metaphor for people's
relationships.
The key phrase associated with sweetness
and softness, it can be linked with romance
and the beginning of the relationships. It
simplifies the depiction of relationship from
sweetness to bitter end.
Core of the song portrays contrast between two types of people in
which one kind of people are open to reflex their love, the others are
only searching for their soulmates.
When there’s love, there's pain as well. It represents no matter what
kind of love you give and receive, you will always receive pain. Love
equals to the same amount of pain and suffering.
In the third verse, the songwriter symbolically talks about the swinging
sensation between love and hate, and how it happened.
The crucial element in the song is the moment the couple breaking up,
only after that one of them realize how special their relationship was
but now it's too late to do anything about it.
