Who am I speaking with?
Hi my name is Evangelos,
and I’m going to be walking you through this session today.
I am conducting interviews to better understand how
people approach learning a new subject and vocabulary.

How much time we need for the
interview?
The session should take 15 - 20 minutes.
The first thing I want to make clear right away is that
this is not a test. You can’t do or say anything wrong
here. In fact, this is probably the one place today
where you don’t have to worry about making
mistakes.

The process is simple. You are going to answer some questions
regarding an application of learning a new vocabulary. Just that!

What alternative method would you use to learn a new vocabulary(from above)?
• Apps that are easy to use
• Not difficult but easy searching of a word (I gave her a phone book, did not have the patience to search <5 min)
What would be the reason, that you find it difficult to learn a new vocabulary?
• The word combinations
• The different meaning in each language
I asked her which languages she would choose to learn
Greek, Arabic or Chinees if she had the chance. None.
Cause of different type letters. Maybe Greek for summer vacations in Greece, or
Arabic for work(foreign customers at work).

German single girl, working
as office administrator in
Stuttgart in the Department
of Asylum seekers.
In her private life she has
many international friends
which they attend some
sort of language school in
order to learn the German
language. Bianca, because
of lack of time she is not
able to attend any kind of
school.
She had used and uses
android devices only. She
claims that she tried iOS
devices but found it difficult
in use.
She is not big fan of reading
books due to lack of time.
In the past she used a paid
software Babble in order to
make her Spanish better.

He randomly searches for apps. Not so often
vocabulary ones.
When he sees that the app does
not have the word, he uninstalls it.
He feels motivated when he sees scores or
dashboards.
He has only Greek friends
He learned English in a private

• Specifically, he claims that clicking(tabbing) two or more times just for
revealing a word is not so efficient for the overall experience)

cheese production in Volos.
At the same time he likes
playing football or going to
the gym.
He has no interaction with
foreign people. He likes
English and he finds it
super useful for holiday
periods. He lived in
Stuttgart for 2 years in the
past.
He used android in the
past, but now he uses only
iPhone. He claims that the
feeling of motion is a lot
better(smoother).
He does not read books at
all.
While in Stuttgart Area, he
used an application called
“German Greek Offline
Dictionary & Translator” .
He found it somewhat good

• He finds kindle a good choice when reading because of the UV lightning

• Too much steps until the learning experience
• He prefers just opening the app an watching the content.
• Not interested in dashboards, forms, login processes or any other kind of
procedural effort.

He does not like reading

He really wants to know the
basic communication words
in English just to live in an
other country abroad after
his retirement.
An app I showed him, and
he liked was “English 5000
Words with pictures”. He
found it helpful enough and
some what relaxing for
learning.
