Water co-intercalation enhances the magnesium ion intercalation kinetics in battery electrodes. When water was added to the propylene carbonate electrolyte, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy testing showed the charge transfer resistance decreased by an order of magnitude, indicating faster magnesium ion intercalation. Future work will further examine the impact of water and test other electrolytes to maximize cycling performance with aqueous systems for magnesium ion batteries.
