II. Background Information/Rationale
Dance is an expression in rhythmic movement of an intensified sense of life, arising from
an inner perception that stimulates both mind and body. When dance as simple emotional
expression develops into a design-a planned organization of a pattern of movement in rhythm, in
space, and on the ground, with its sets of steps, gestures, and dynamics- it becomes a specific
dance. When this specific dance becomes a group dance, stylized in a common design, it
becomes a dance form. Dance forms which may take centuries to develop, reflect the customs of
the society in which they have evolved.
Reflecting the social and recreational expression of the peasantry in feudal society, fold
dance developed from the racial, regional memories of older motifs in communal dance.
Folk dance, basically a repetition and limited in scope, achieved its own of development
in its transformation to social dance. Ethnic dance on the other hand, preserved the dance
heritage, developed distinctively characteristic styles, a specific and often difficult technique, and
a concomitant terminology and schools of training. Moreover ethnic dance is selective and more
artistically conscious than folk dance.
2. Though dancing is just a phase of MSEP, it is essential in our school children activities.
Every time we have celebration, affair, or occasion, we expect dance as an entertainment
number.
Project Graceful Revival of Acquired Cultural Revival of Folkdance Steps (GRAFS)
aims to improve the performance of Lamesa Elementary School pupils in the field of MSEP,
particularly in folk dancing. This project calls for the adoption of varied dance steps and the use
of appropriate costumes and materials.
Revival of our cultural steps is a great need in our school curriculum in order to treasure
the cultural heritage of our country. This will develop a deep sense of nationalism (Makabayan)
among our children. This will be a way of preserving our values which is one of the cores of the
Department of Education.
The project intends to lessen teachers, difficulty in teaching folk dances. The proponent
has strong belief that good approaches and strategies in teaching skills in folk dancing are
needed. This project focuses on teaching the fundamental steps and the basic steps in folk
dancing as well as folk dances with a dance system of movement and gesture.
