Technically, the term CrossFit refers to a
company formally established in 2000 by
Greg Glassman. Its rst a liate was
CrossFit North in Seattle. By 2005, the
company had 13 a liates, and by 2012,
just twelve years after the company
started, there were already 3,400
a liates worldwide.

However, CrossFit had its roots planted
years earlier, when Glassman was a

stronger and realized that through the
incorporation of dumbbells and a barbell
in his workout routine, he could get
stronger than any other gymnast he
knew who was working solely with
bodyweight.
This advantage spilled into other sports.
Glassman noticed that it was easy as pie
to beat his gym-friends in bicycling and
weightlifting. This led him to think of the
many bene ts of being a jack of all
trades. No need to be a master of
anything; there’s a price to pay for
having expertise in only one eld.
Greater work, as the company’s motto
puts it, is best achieved across broad
time and modal domains. Ultimately,
CrossFit’s goal is general physical
preparedness and health.

In 1995, Glassman established a gym in
Santa Cruz, California. That same year,
he was hired to train the Santa Cruz
Police Department. As he began to get
overbooked, he started doubling up
clients and found that not only could he
earn more, clients also often enjoyed the
group activity. Thus, the CrossFit
community preceded the founding of the
company. The rest, as they say, is history.
