Nelson Mandela was born in 1918 in South Africa. In the 1940s, he joined the African National Congress to fight against apartheid and the oppression of Black South Africans by the white minority government. On the most significant day when democracy was established in South Africa, Mandela gave a speech thanking dignitaries from around the world. He assured South Africans that the country would never experience oppression again under the new democratic, non-discriminatory government. The people of South Africa sang two national anthems to symbolize this historic day and the end of oppression.
