A live center is used at the non-driven or tailstock end of lathes. It allows for higher turning speeds without needing separate lubrication and provides greater clamping force. CNC turrets primarily use live centers and they can also be used for general machining. Live centers have spring loading to compensate for any misalignment without damaging the workpiece or center tip, ensuring uniform consistent tension during machining. Some live centers also have adjustable shafts to accommodate non-standard tip angles.
