The original Olympic Games were held in Olympia from 776 BC to 392 AD, featuring competitions every four years. They were abolished by the Roman Emperor Theodosius I in 392 AD. The modern Olympics were revived in 1896 in Athens by Pierre de Coubertin and the International Olympic Committee. The five Olympic rings represent the five inhabited continents and their colors appear on all national flags. Olympic medals today are mostly silver coated in gold, with the last pure gold medals awarded at the 1904 Games.
