Mobinil is Egypt's largest mobile phone provider seeking to reduce costs and environmental impact through green initiatives. It has over 20 million subscribers in Egypt and earned $11 billion in net income in 2008. However, operating expenses are increasing, including from a recent fire caused by overuse of electricity. Mobinil plans to use more renewable energy sources like natural gas, go paperless to provide services online, install more efficient equipment in its many customer service centers, and invest in long-term changes to become more environmentally sustainable while maintaining profits.

The African continent offers an ideal environment for electricity generation from renewable sources. Therefore, it is not surprising that sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) already ranks third worldwide in terms of percentage of electricity generated through renewable sources. Roughly 27% of electricity generated in 2015 was generated through renewable sources. Lesotho, Ethiopia, D.R. Congo, Central African Republic, Namibia, Zambia, Uganda and Malawi rank best, as they generate more than 90% of their total electricity output from renewable sources.
However, as of 2015, 91% of the renewable energy generated in SSA was generated from hydropower. The continent’s abundant solar, wind, biomass and geothermal resources are yet to be exploited more efficiently.
The Africa Renewable Energy Initiative (AREI), established in 2015 and operating under the mandate of the African Union, aims to add 310 gigawatt of additional renewable energy generation capacity to the continent until 2030. This brings also other sources of renewable energy than water into focus and creates high opportunities for international technology and service providers in the renewable energy sector.

Results show ICT ensuring responsible energy use through monitoring, data sharing, reverse logistics, and remote building/grid management. Stimulus spending has increased efficiency investment, though total investment will need to triple by 2030 under net-zero scenarios. Efficiency measures could create 4 million new jobs by 2030. The longest-running efficiency programs have achieved over 50% energy savings in appliances even as prices fell. Rapid digital technology deployment is taking efficiency to new levels through enhanced controls and connectivity, but efforts must be balanced globally to ensure equitable transitions.

Energy efficiency and renewables contribute the most to reducing CO2 emissions, providing 42% and 34% respectively of emissions reductions needed by 2040 according to the Sustainable Development Scenario. However, energy intensity improvements have slowed in recent years due to weaker energy efficiency policies and growth in energy-intensive economies, a trend that must be reversed. Additionally, investment in renewable, nuclear and grid technologies needs to accelerate to achieve long-term emissions reduction goals, as 2018 investment was one-third below required levels. Coal power plants currently produce one-third of CO2 emissions, with half being less than 15 years old, so policies are urgently needed to support technologies like CCUS to transition existing coal infrastructure to sustainable pathways.

National Energy Efficiency Action Plans
The document discusses the European Union's National Energy Efficiency Action Plans. It outlines various EU directives related to energy efficiency dating back to 1992. A case study on the Mongstad refinery energy project in Norway aims to improve energy efficiency in production and processing. Investing in energy efficiency across sectors can significantly reduce energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions.
Özyeğin University, Center for Entrepreneurship
The Center for Entrepreneurship at Özyeğin University runs an accelerator program called Girişim Fabrikası (Fit Startup Factory) to support tech entrepreneurs in Turkey. The program provides training, mentoring, funding, and resources to help entrepreneurs develop sustainable, high-growth startups. It seeks promising young founders and helps close gaps in their knowledge and networks. The 6-month program guides startups through developing and validating business models, creating prototypes, and bringing products to market. Since launching 18 months ago, the program has received over 700 applications, supported 74 participants, funded 10 startups, and helped create 40 new jobs.
Nawart final event
Nawart is a Renewable Energy entrepreneurship support program that is designed to encourage entrepreneurs to contribute to building a Renewable Energy Sector in Egypt. The program is sponsored by Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) Egypt and Cleantech Arabia and is supported by the GIZ Responsible & Inclusive Business Hub MENA (RIBH MENA) and the Ministry of Trade and Industry's Industrial Council for Technology & Innovation. After a competitive selection process, the program hosted 14 renewable energy teams for an intensive 10-month program.

National Energy Efficiency Action Plans

Reforms are needed in both countries to strengthen property rights, improve access to capital and support for entrepreneurs to create optimal conditions for business growth.

HMRC’s IT Transformation Program Exceeds its Annual £161m Savings Target
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) was created as a merger of the Inland Revenue and HM Customs & Excise, creating one of the largest IT infrastructures in the UK. They linked up existing technology and added new systems according to new operational and business requirements, but maintenance costs and managing interdependencies left little IT budget for further change.
HMRC therefore needed a smaller, cheaper, more modern IT estate, but lacked the investment budget normally needed to deliver a large transformation program.
