On April 30, 2016, slock.it, a blockchain and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions
company, announced the launch of ‘The DAO’ on Ethereum. The DAO was
positioned to function as a decentralized venture capital fund in which over
$150 million USD was raised within a 28-day crowdfunding window.15 The DAO
granted voting rights to members, proportional to their investment, who could
then vote to finance projects. If a project proved to be profitable, members
would be rewarded based on the terms of the relevant smart contracts and
their stake in the DAO.
In the ever-evolving landscape of blockchain technology, Ethereum stands as a pioneering force, reshaping our understanding of decentralized systems and smart contracts.
The document provides a snapshot of the state of the Ethereum network by reviewing statistics on its usage and community. It details that the network has processed 240 million transactions, with 1.3 million in one day at its peak. The Ethereum developer community is estimated at 250,000 people and its blockchain is the most active for smart contracts, powering 94% of the top 100 tokens. The document concludes that the Ethereum ecosystem is diverse, decentralized, strong, and driving innovation through its applications.
The document discusses various topics related to digital assets and blockchains, including:
1. Different types of crypto tokens like utility tokens, work tokens, and asset tokens. It notes that token sales exceeded $4 billion USD in 2017.
2. Descriptions of Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin and their purposes. Ethereum is noted as being a decentralized platform that runs smart contracts.
3. The creation and attack of The DAO, a decentralized autonomous organization, which raised $150 million but was subsequently attacked resulting in a $60 million ether theft. This led to debates around hard forks on the Ethereum network.
4. Models for blockchain applications including the OSI model and comparisons
Ethereum Classic is a decentralized blockchain that emerged after a hard fork of the Ethereum network in 2016. It aims to maintain the principles of an immutable blockchain without centralized authority or human intervention. The roadmap outlines plans to stabilize the platform through 2017 by delaying the difficulty bomb, expanding the development team, and implementing improvements like hybrid PoW/PoS consensus. The long term vision is for Ethereum Classic to become a secure, commercial-friendly platform for decentralized applications.
Ethereum is an open-source, public, blockchain-based distributed computing platform and operating system featuring smart contract (scripting) functionality. It supports a modified version of Nakamoto consensus via transaction-based state transitions.

In early 2009, an anonymous developer (or group) launched the cryptocurrency known as Bitcoin. This developer went by the name Satoshi Nakamoto. In the years since, the technology that makes Bitcoin possible has taken on a life of its own, and numerous other cryptocurrencies have sprung up to compete with it. To an outside observer, today's cryptocurrency market might appear to be little more than a group of similar offerings all competing for the attention of investors.
There's quite a bit of variance between today's cryptocurrencies. They rely on different versions of the original blockchain technology that powers Bitcoin, and not all of them are designed to function like fiat currencies. Making sense of it all requires careful study and a fairly extensive understanding of how cryptocurrencies work under the hood.
As a guide for those not immersed in the intricacies of crypto-technology, here's a look at the four major types of cryptocurrency, and what they're good for.

It’s telling that one of the most popular colloquial terms for a cryptocurrency is “altcoin”, a portmanteau of “alternative” and “bitcoin”. Bitcoin, the original cryptocurrency, has become so ubiquitous that it is the definition of its own category. 7 Events That Changed Cryptocurrencies Forever Coin Gabbar.pdfcoingabbar
The world of digital currency is constantly changing, growing, and evolving. Although it is a relatively new industry, cryptocurrencies continue to surprise us with every turn of events. One moment there's a hack or security breach; the next, there is some ground-breaking development or partnership announcement. The digital currency space is unpredictable, exciting, and scary all at the same time. This article will explore some of the most important events that changed the crypto sphere forever. Each has been instrumental in guiding the industry on an accelerated growth trajectory and positioning it for greater adoption by mainstream consumers moving forward. Let's take a look.
The changing world of Cryptocurrencies
Cryptocurrencies are digital assets designed to work as a medium of exchange that uses strong cryptography to secure financial transactions, control the creation of additional units, and verify the transfer of assets. While the concept of digital currencies has existed for decades, it wasn't until 2009 that Bitcoin emerged as the first decentralized cryptocurrency.
Since then, the industry has exploded, with new coins and tokens emerging regularly. Today, there are over 2,000 cryptocurrencies in circulation. The majority of these are alternative coins, or "altcoins," that have occurred since Bitcoin's launch. While many projects are legitimate and hold value, many fraudulent altcoins exist purely to scam investors.
That said, the industry's growth has been nothing short of remarkable. Cryptocurrencies have already proven that they can exist outside of the centralized financial system, and thousands of people have already begun using them as a means of payment for goods and services.
Bitcoin is no longer decentralized
Bitcoin was originally designed to be a fully decentralized network, with no central authority controlling the blockchain. However, that was never the case in practice, as a small number of mining pools have always controlled the bulk of the network's hash power. That changed in 2018 after China attempted to shut down its domestic Bitcoin mining operations.
As a result, many of the world's largest mining pools moved their operations to other countries and away from the Chinese government's jurisdiction. However, this dramatic shift in hash power distribution has placed centralized mining operations in a dominant position. This has raised concerns among long-time Bitcoin enthusiasts, who fear that the network is becoming increasingly centralized.
Summing up
Cryptocurrencies have come a long way since Bitcoin was released in 2009. Now, millions of people all over the world use digital currencies as a means of exchange. With the industry continuing to expand and grow, there is no doubt that digital currencies will play an essential part in the future of money.

"Does Foreign Direct Investment Negatively Affect Preservation of Culture in the Global South? Case Studies in Thailand and Cambodia."
Do elements of globalization, such as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), negatively affect the ability of countries in the Global South to preserve their culture? This research aims to answer this question by employing a cross-sectional comparative case study analysis utilizing methods of difference. Thailand and Cambodia are compared as they are in the same region and have a similar culture. The metric of difference between Thailand and Cambodia is their ability to preserve their culture. This ability is operationalized by their respective attitudes towards FDI; Thailand imposes stringent regulations and limitations on FDI while Cambodia does not hesitate to accept most FDI and imposes fewer limitations. The evidence from this study suggests that FDI from globally influential countries with high gross domestic products (GDPs) (e.g. China, U.S.) challenges the ability of countries with lower GDPs (e.g. Cambodia) to protect their culture. Furthermore, the ability, or lack thereof, of the receiving countries to protect their culture is amplified by the existence and implementation of restrictive FDI policies imposed by their governments.
My study abroad in Bali, Indonesia, inspired this research topic as I noticed how globalization is changing the culture of its people. I learned their language and way of life which helped me understand the beauty and importance of cultural preservation. I believe we could all benefit from learning new perspectives as they could help us ideate solutions to contemporary issues and empathize with others.

Fabular Frames and the Four Ratio ProblemMajid Iqbal
Digital, interactive art showing the struggle of a society in providing for its present population while also saving planetary resources for future generations. Spread across several frames, the art is actually the rendering of real and speculative data. The stereographic projections change shape in response to prompts and provocations. Visitors interact with the model through speculative statements about how to increase savings across communities, regions, ecosystems and environments. Their fabulations combined with random noise, i.e. factors beyond control, have a dramatic effect on the societal transition. Things get better. Things get worse. The aim is to give visitors a new grasp and feel of the ongoing struggles in democracies around the world.
Stunning art in the small multiples format brings out the spatiotemporal nature of societal transitions, against backdrop issues such as energy, housing, waste, farmland and forest. In each frame we see hopeful and frightful interplays between spending and saving. Problems emerge when one of the two parts of the existential anaglyph rapidly shrinks like Arctic ice, as factors cross thresholds. Ecological wealth and intergenerational equity areFour at stake. Not enough spending could mean economic stress, social unrest and political conflict. Not enough saving and there will be climate breakdown and ‘bankruptcy’. So where does speculative design start and the gambling and betting end? Behind each fabular frame is a four ratio problem. Each ratio reflects the level of sacrifice and self-restraint a society is willing to accept, against promises of prosperity and freedom. Some values seem to stabilise a frame while others cause collapse. Get the ratios right and we can have it all. Get them wrong and things get more desperate.
