1. Video Solution Profile
Client:
Church of Saint Charles Borromeo
Skillman, NJ
The Client
How can we use multimedia systems to interact with our teens? What
can we do to allow overflow parishioners to see a live mass in an-
other part of our building? These were just a few questions pro-
posed by the team at Saint Charles Borromeo in their quest to imple-
ment affective video technologies. Our team studied their needs,
goals and future requirements to develop systems that would meet
all of their goals both now and in the future.
Design Methodology
IT Initiatives developed a series of audio/video solutions
to integrate into the new Saint Charles youth center as well
as their astonishing social center.
First, we began our design in the mar velously
appointmented social center, serving in excess of 400 guests.
We analyzed use and recognized the parish was in need of
an overflow application, where parishioners could watch a
live liturgy from the Church in the event that seating was
limited in the nave. In addition to live video, traditional
video inputs would be implemented for presentations,
videos, talks and other events.
Integration was critical in this space, as any visible
materials would have to compliment the well designed
architecture. To accomplish this, a 6500 lumen
projector was in-wall mounted in the rear of the
room. An in-ceiling tensioned electric screen was
mounted along with custom material for the specific
size requirements of the space.
A small, inconspiculous camera was installed in the
rear of the Church nave. This provided a live video
feed to the social center for overflow applications
or to record Church events.
2. Social Center Control System
Ease of use for system control was a paramount requirement for the system.
Integration with other facility components was also important, so the user
would only have to use a single interface to control any function of the
room. A wireless Crestron control system was selected for this application,
which allowed the user to bring the device anywhere within the social
center and control the system. This was
accomplished by the color touchscreen
wireless interface. The control system
also controlled the audio system, Lutron lighting system, and shading system. In addition,
the pan/tilt/zoom camera from the Church was also controlled with this device. Simple,
one button presets were programmed to allow the camera to switch to focus on different
locations throughout the nave. Lighting presets were implemented to allow the user to
change lighting scenes from the wireless control system.

The Result
A functional, state-of-the-art integrated solution described the
outcome of the project. The system was blessed by Bishop
Bootkoski and first used during the dedication to allow
parishioners to watch from the social center the bishop as he
blessed rooms throughout the building. It has proven to be a
wonderful resource for presentations, movie nights, videos, talks
and other common events. The system also can record live video
from the Church; allowing the parish to earn a significant profit
from the recording and distribution of confirmation, communion
and other events.
