Parke’s Castle Fivemile Bourne, County Leitrim, Ireland Parke’s Castle is an example of a Manor House of the 17 th century Plantation period located on Sligo-Dromahair Road beside Lough Gill, County Leitrim, Ireland.
Parke’s Castle – County Leitrim, Ireland Historical Background Parke’s Castle was constructed in two stages by two different men from very distinct cultures: Irish and English. The Manor House was erected in the 1620’s by Englishman Robert Parke. King James I granted the confiscated O’Rourke estate to Parke after Brian na Murth O’Rourke’s hanging at Tyburn in 1591 for sheltering the shipwrecked Spanish Naval Officer Francisco de Cuellar following the 1588 wreck of the Spanish Armada off the West Coast of Ireland. Of lineage of the O’Rourke clan, Brian O’Rourke was descended from the rulers of Breifne in the 12 th century. He refused to bow to Queen Elizabeth I of England, was tried for high treason in London and subsequently hanged. O’Rourke’s castle, of which only the foundations remain, was built in the 15 th century by the O’Rourke family.
