This document analyzes the opening title sequence of the horror film "House on Haunted Hill" through 9 frames. The frames establish elements of mystery and unease through a shaky title against a dark background. They also introduce a well-known actor, a demonic child, pre-planned sinister ideas depicted on a haunted house, medication for the mentally ill, handwritten notes, a psychotic jumping man who may be responsible for the medication, a spider to deliberately induce unease in viewers, and a final frame reintroducing the director's name against a dark, sinister background.
2. This shows the production company, Warner Bros, in quite a shaky
background, supporting the idea that the film will be quite shaky and
uneasy throughout. It also shows quite a dark background to give the
element of mystery.
3. This shows the title of the film, House on Haunted Hill, in quite a shaky
background, supporting the idea that the film will be jumpy and uneasy
throughout. It also shows quite a dark background to give the element of
mystery.
4. This shows a well known actor who will be in the film, this may persuade
people to watch the film because of who plays the main role. It also shows
a demonic child in the background to show that it is going to incorporate
the typical conventions of a horror.
5. This shows the outline of a haunted house with symbolic images drawn
over it. This gives the impression that whatever sinister ideas are portrayed
in the film have been pre-planned.
6. This shows some medication that may be used within the film by a
psychotic doctor for example. It also gives the impression that someone is
‘ill’, maybe mentally, and they need correcting.
7. This shows a dark background still with handwritten notes on the left
hand side, once again giving the impression that whatever has happened
was pre-planned and didn’t happen on the spot.
8. This shows a psychotic man jumping up and down, back and forth
towards the camera. It supports the typical characters in a horror film,
he may be responsible for the medicine that was shown earlier in the
sequence.
9. This simply shows a spider. This is because many people are scared of
this animal and just by looking at it they will feel uneasy, supporting the
theory that people go to the cinema to see horrors to deliberately feel
uneasy.
10. The final part of the sequence shows the directors name again. This is a
common element within horror films. It is still using a dark and ‘stormy’
background to show that it is still sinister.
