Intellectual property (IP) covers trademarks, trade secrets, patents, and copyrights, and is used to protect corporate ideas in a capitalist economy. Companies invest in IP by manufacturing products, licensing patents, protecting current products, and trading IP with other corporations. The extent of protection depends on individual country laws, but filing IP in multiple economies can increase profits on a given product. When expanding IP internationally, companies should research prior patents, properly translate filings to minimize mistakes, and be prepared to litigate violations of their IP rights.
This document discusses the differences between prescriptivism and descriptivism in IP translations and which approach is best. Prescriptivism emphasizes strict grammar rules while descriptivism is more fluid. Using only prescriptivism can increase costs and time on translations. A balance of both approaches is ideal, with prescriptivism for accurate language and descriptivism to convey meaning when strict grammar is not required to save resources. The best translation services can balance these approaches and manage the entire IP application process.

BECOMING A
LAWYER IN THE
U.S.
Learn what it takes to become a
lawyer!
2. 1. GO TO A 4-YEAR COLLEGE.
Every law school in the United States requires that you have an
undergraduate degree, and preferably one from a reputable
university. You don’t necessarily need to be pre-law, but it’s
recommended you study one of the following:
English
Public speaking
Government
History
Economics
Mathematics
3. 2. MAINTAIN A HIGH GPA.
If you want to get into law school, you’ll need a minimum 3.0 GPA.
If you want to get into a prestigious law school, you’ll need a
much higher GPA—closer to 3.8 or 4.0. Having a high GPA will
also help you get financial aid, which is a plus because law school
is very expensive.
4. 3. REGISTER FOR THE LSAT.
The Law School Admission Test is a half-day standardized test
required for anyone wanting to get into law school. It provides a
way for law schools to see how well the tester is at acquired
reading and verbal reasoning skills.
5. 4. STUDY, STUDY, STUDY.
You should be preparing for the LSAT way before you plan on
taking it. Doing well on this test is extremely important, as it will
determine where you go to law school. Take a preparatory class
so you can get the highest score possible (180 is a perfect score).
6. 5. APPLY TO SEVERAL LAW
SCHOOLS.
Apply to American Bar Association (ABA)-accredited law schools.
These law schools will be recognized by the state, and you’ll have
a better chance of getting a better job if you go to an ABA-
accredited institution.
7. 6. CHOOSE WISELY.
Do your research before applying to various law schools.
Remember that application fees are high, so it’s not wise to apply
to dozens of law schools, especially if you’re not really interested
in some of them. Make a list of the schools you have the best
chance of getting into.
8. 7. DEVOTE YOURSELF TO THE
PROGRAM.
Law school isn’t easy and it isn’t cheap. Take it seriously by
devoting large amounts of time to reading cases, researching
case law, writing detailed briefs, and preparing for class. Join or
form a study group with people in your program. It will help to
have the support.
9. 8. PASS A STATE BAR EXAM.
After your first year of law school,
you’ll take the Multistate Professional
Responsibility Examination. It’s a
standardized test that evaluates your
knowledge of the standards of
professional conduct.
Once you take the MPRE, decide on
the area of law you want to practice,
and graduate law school, you’ll take
