This document compares flame treatment and corona treatment for improving polymer surface adhesion. It finds that flame treatment provides higher wettability and surface energy than corona treatment due to producing intermediate molecular weight oxidized materials rather than low molecular weight ones. Flame treatment also exhibits significantly lower treatment decay over time. Additional benefits of flame treatment include better metal adhesion for metallization processes, better adhesion of UV inks, no damage to barrier properties or backside treatment, and no production of ozone.
