This document is a letter from the Saint Elizabeth Community fundraising for their memory care unit at Saint Elizabeth Manor. Barbara is a gentle soul with a huge heart. Articulate and eloquent, her
husband Tony and their four children (Maria, Kate, Mark and Matt), always
knew they could count on Barbara’s insightful support and encouragement.
Over the course of her 30 year career as a school psychologist/guidance
counselor, hundreds of Rhode Island public school children also came to rely
on Barbara’s compassionate counsel as they navigated challenges of their own.
In 2008 it was clear that Barbara’s memory impairment was progressing. When
her wandering presented a genuine threat to her safety, Tony and the children
knew the time had come for Barbara to receive specialized, 24-hour care.
But – the thought of moving Barbara out of her cherished home was heart
wrenching. This difficult decision was made easier as soon as the family toured
Saint Elizabeth Manor’s memory care unit where Barbara now lives.

Despite her circumstances, it remains an essential aspect of Barbara’s nature to reach out and lend her
support to those around her. The staff recognized this moments after Barbara’s arrival at Saint Elizabeth
Manor, as they saw her immediately make efforts to comfort the other residents. Sensitive to her helpful
intentions, the Manor staff has continually found creative ways to encourage and enable Barbara’s
nurturing disposition. They now make her a part of their daily work, including her in tasks around the
nursing station where she seems to be especially comfortable.
Barbara, the gentle soul with a huge heart has found a renewed sense of purpose, dignity and belonging
since joining Saint Elizabeth Community.
