Kanpur is a city in northern India that has been known by various names throughout history. It has a large metropolitan area of over 1,640 square kilometers, almost 3 times the size of Mumbai. Kanpur was an important British stronghold in the 19th century, housing barracks for 7,000 soldiers. Major sites in Kanpur include Naveen Market, Allen Zoo which is Asia's largest zoological garden by area, and Bithoor where the Hindu god Rama's wife Sita is said to have given birth.
