Most tools are designed with a single function in mind, but can often be leveraged for additional workflows as well. For example, SonarQube is a marketed as a platform to manage code quality, but custom plugins can also enable security testing. At its heart, Jenkins is a build tool, but it can be used for security testing as well. Don't like the security dashboard applications bundled with your commercial security tools? Either Jenkins or SonarQube can replace them! Can't stand viewing your tool exports in Excel? A simple XML transformation can allow you to see your data in a way that makes sense to you.
Welcome to the age of APIs. Nearly every major software product now exposes RESTful APIs, an SDK, command line, or plugin interface. Don't limit yourself to out-of-the-box functionality - customize your tools to work best for you.
This talk will describe some ways exposed APIs and plugin interfaces in commercial and open source products have been used to make work more effective and efficient. We'll demonstrate simple tools that interact with common software packages, like Jenkins, SonarQube, and OWASP ZAP, to streamline workflows and provide better visibility on what matters most to us. And we'll tell you how to get started getting more out of the tools you already use.

The Mobile Tester - Your place in the team with Stephen Janaway [Webinar]TEST Huddle
Stephen Janaway of the NET-A-PORTER GROUP gave this presentation on mobile testing as part of the TEST Huddle Mobile Testing Webinar Series.
Being a tester on a mobile team is not easy. As well as a multitude of devices and OS versions to test, you find yourself being a part of extremely fast paced projects, where the need to ship an application is often seen as most important. Frequently you are the only tester in the team. In this webinar, Stephen explains some strategies to help you adapt and excel in the challenging world of mobile development.
Key Takeaways:
Why mobile development is different
The testers place in a mobile team
How you can adapt and excel
Watch the recording of the webinar here: http://testhuddle.com/resource/the-mobile-tester-your-place-in-the-team/
Mobile testing is getting harder—more devices, multiple operating systems, higher quality expectations, and shorter development cycles. How do you deal with these demands? In order to align mobile testing with product strategies and market goals, Tom Chavez says you first need to (1) know your users and how they will use your app. (2) Knowing the app and how users may actually be using it differently are key to testing to satisfy users—not the designers. (3) With test case matrices vastly larger than ever, prioritizing tests into “must-haves” and “nice-to-haves” is necessary to make the testing process manageable. With so many devices on the market, you have to (4) determine which are required for testing, which are optional, which to purchase, and which you might borrow or rent from a device cloud. Tom advises (5) how to know which tests to automate, which should remain manual, and (6) how back-end performance affects user experience. And finally, (7) know your edges. Learn the key strategies for mobile testing and this seven-step process with the tools you can use to deliver the testing to meet your project goals.

Techniques, Tips & Tools For Mobile App TestingSOASTA
Today, mobile app testing expertise is in high demand and offers an exciting career path in test/QA. However, the recent Future of Testing study, sponsored by TechWell, noted that the biggest challenge in mobile―just behind having enough time to test―is expertise. Brad Johnson shares how companies from banking to retail use data from real production users, continuous integration frameworks, cloud-based testing platforms, and real mobile devices to help ensure every user experiences top-rated performance—all the time. Brad shares insight about what to test for mobile, when to first automate, and a metric that will drive real change. Explore how organizations are communicating across teams and improving developer-to-tester collaboration with new approaches. Testers need to develop new skills ranging from software coding requirements to data science. Takeaway tips and ideas to impact your company, enhance your skill set, and propel your career with exciting options and new challenges.
Metrics, Metrics Everywhere (but where the heck do you start?)SOASTA

How to measure the business impact of web performanceSOASTA
If your site were one second slower, how many of your visitors would bounce?
If your site were one second faster, how many additional orders would you receive?
Bottom line: Do you know what one second of latency is worth to your business?
Traditional approaches to performance monitoring are fatally flawed. They measure performance only in a silo, telling you how long key actions took but not putting that information into a context you can use to improve the one metric that ultimately matters: revenue. Bridging this gap requires the collection of performance and business data together, and then analyzing this data using the proper analytic methods.
Using modern Real User Monitoring (RUM) techniques, Buddy Brewer will show you how to quantify the impact even one second of latency has on key business metrics like bounce and conversion rate.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Create a campaign using Mailchimp with merge tags/fields
Send an interactive Slack channel message (using buttons)
Have the message received by managers and peers along with a test email for review
But there’s more:
In a second workflow supporting the same use case, you’ll see:
Your campaign sent to target colleagues for approval
If the “Approve” button is clicked, a Jira/Zendesk ticket is created for the marketing design team
But—if the “Reject” button is pushed, colleagues will be alerted via Slack message

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
