1) Ghrelin was first discovered as the endogenous ligand for the growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GSH-R), which stimulates the release of growth hormone.
2) Later research found that ghrelin is produced in the stomach and that injections of ghrelin stimulate food intake and appetite in rodents.
3) Ghrelin levels rise during starvation and fall after eating, indicating a role in appetite regulation and metabolism. Mice lacking ghrelin are protected from diet-induced obesity.
