Engine brake:
• When the bail arm is released the
engine and blades stop quickly
• Used on the 19” mowers
• Lower cost system
• Provides improved safety to avoid
injury when emptying the grass catcher
by stopping the engine and blades
4. Mowsafe Technology
The Mowsafe Blade brake is unique to Honda
• With the engine running, to start the blades the yellow
button must be depressed and then the bail arm moved
to the handle, away from the operator.
• When the bail arm is released, the blades stop quickly
but the engine continues to run.
• Used on the 21” self propelled models
• The grass catcher can be emptied safely while the engine
is still running
• Enables the mower to be self propelled without the
blades rotating, ideal for avoiding flung objects such as
stones on gravel driveways when transporting to and
from the mowing location
• Easy to identify by the yellow button

10. Why mulch vs catch?
• When done in the right conditions, mulching gives a reasonably tidy finish. It works with a combination of blades and a
mulching plug (or Versamow) working together to spin the clippings around the inside of the deck several times, chopping
them up into very fine pieces before spitting them out the bottom. The small clippings fall down between the blades of grass
and biodegrade, returning nutrients to the soil.
• The “right conditions”, in a nutshell, is summer when the grass is drier and you mow more often. In summer, mulching can be
good in dry areas to retain moisture in the lawn. However, the rest of the year, thick, long and lush grass can clump and
become trapped under the deck. Mulching takes less time than catching because you don’t have to stop to empty the catcher.
• When mulching, the ‘Mulching Rule of Thirds’ applies – do not attempt to cut off more than the top 1/3 of the grass, as this will
be much harder on the mower and leave an unsightly mess. Cutting the top 1/3 only, allows the clippings to disperse better
back into the lawn.
Mulching is right for you if:
• You mow regularly (at least once a week)
• You don’t have anywhere to put the grass clippings
• You don’t live in an excessively damp, often wet climate
• You want your lawn to look good and you want to return nutrients back into the lawn.
