Users of Mobile Phone: hands-free
• Two-thirds (66%) of the Mobile Phone
  users had a hands-free system:
     – 18% used hands-free kit including a speaker
       and microphone,
     – 17% used a wired ear-piece, and
     – 16% used a wireless Bluetooth ear-piece.
• About half of the respondents reported
that they use the hands free system for
all or almost all of their calls
26/11/12 8
Motives of Navigation System usage
• NS is most useful when driving in an
  unfamiliar environment or when lost,
driving at night, long trips, city roads
• NS takes away the stress of finding the
  destination

26/11/12 9
Motives of mobile phone usage

    • Emergency situations, efficient use of
time, to get route information, to inform
      about changes in schedule
    • 70% reported to avoid using the phone
      when:
       • In a complex situation such as
merging, turning or when in an
         unfamiliar environment
    • 40% reported favouring the use in an
      familiar environment or on highways
26/11/12 10
Examples of usage of information and
            communication systems
• “I use NS always to check the route to
unfamiliar destinations, but also to find out
whether my everyday routes could be changed
to faster and better ones.” (Man, 42)
• “I like the system very much, it is
  multifunctional: guidance, speed limit
information, warns about traffic jams and
  accidents etc.” (Man, 38)
• “I often phone while driving if I have to inform
about changes in my schedule.” (Woman, 40)
26/11/12 11
Examples of usage of two systems
                                   together
• “I use the navigation system to check the
speed limit. Then I switch the cruise control on
and select the speed a little bit above the limit.”
  (Man, 23)
• “The navigation system warns about the speed
monitoring cameras, so I can adjust the speed
with the cruise control.” (Woman, 43)
• “I switch the cruise control on if I need to
concentrate on a phone call.” (Woman, 40)
