The main topic of the First PANLAR Rheumatology Review Course is “Challenges and solutions of Rheumatoid Arthritis in Latin America”. The event is to be held in April 2015 in Barranquilla,
Colombia.
Over 600 delegates from all countries shall discuss subjects such as updating Pan American guides, an excellency network of arthritis clinics, new image diagnosis methods and aspects related to the impact of new forms of juvenile arthritis, a growing issue in the field. We currently have better diagnosis methods and better therapeutic instruments.
We must now improve our attention model to comprehensively reachall areas of patient assistance. We seek to export advances equally among affected population all over the continent and to decrease the social and economic impact of the disease by enhancing assistance channels and early detection techniques through improved education to physicians and patients.
We thereby invite all colleagues interested in this important ailment to join any of the different study groups offered by PANLAR. The new PANLAR is strengthened by this 1st Review Course, which shall incorporate the ideas set forth by RA, Imaging and Pediatric Rheumatology groups, as well as Excellency Clinics, for the occasion.
We are focused on the in-depth study of our challenges and designing our own solutions.

First Symposium on Welfare in Aquaculture: Welfare Indicators for Novel Speci...Sara Barrento
Over five hundred and eighty species of aquatic species are farmed globally - most are fish. Lumpfish is a novel marine species to aquaculture and one of the fastest growing farmed fish in Europe. But novel species are challenging - there is little information to guide best practice and as a result this can impact on their welfare. Lumpfish are unique as they are not farmed for human consumption, they provide a service to salmon farmers. Lumpfish are cleaner fish - they clean sealice off salmon. This event aimed to bring to life the 1st Symposium on Welfare in Aquaculture the first edition focused on welfare indicators of novel species. This event explored commonalities and differences in the welfare requirements of different farmed species and asked whether some common welfare metrics exist. The morning symposium was followed by a workshop on lumpfish welfare in the afternoon.

Ethanol (CH3CH2OH), or beverage alcohol, is a two-carbon alcohol
that is rapidly distributed in the body and brain. Ethanol alters many
neurochemical systems and has rewarding and addictive properties. It
is the oldest recreational drug and likely contributes to more morbidity,
mortality, and public health costs than all illicit drugs combined. The
5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM-5) integrates alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence into a single
disorder called alcohol use disorder (AUD), with mild, moderate,
and severe subclassifications (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
In the DSM-5, all types of substance abuse and dependence have been
combined into a single substance use disorder (SUD) on a continuum
from mild to severe. A diagnosis of AUD requires that at least two of
the 11 DSM-5 behaviors be present within a 12-month period (mild
AUD: 2–3 criteria; moderate AUD: 4–5 criteria; severe AUD: 6–11 criteria).
The four main behavioral effects of AUD are impaired control over
drinking, negative social consequences, risky use, and altered physiological
effects (tolerance, withdrawal). This chapter presents an overview
of the prevalence and harmful consequences of AUD in the U.S.,
the systemic nature of the disease, neurocircuitry and stages of AUD,
comorbidities, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, genetic risk factors, and
pharmacotherapies for AUD.
Acute scrotum is a general term referring to an emergency condition affecting the contents or the wall of the scrotum.
There are a number of conditions that present acutely, predominantly with pain and/or swelling
A careful and detailed history and examination, and in some cases, investigations allow differentiation between these diagnoses. A prompt diagnosis is essential as the patient may require urgent surgical intervention
Testicular torsion refers to twisting of the spermatic cord, causing ischaemia of the testicle.
Testicular torsion results from inadequate fixation of the testis to the tunica vaginalis producing ischemia from reduced arterial inflow and venous outflow obstruction.
The prevalence of testicular torsion in adult patients hospitalized with acute scrotal pain is approximately 25 to 50 percent

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN HEALTHCARE.pdfAnujkumaranit
Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems. It encompasses tasks such as learning, reasoning, problem-solving, perception, and language understanding. AI technologies are revolutionizing various fields, from healthcare to finance, by enabling machines to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence.
Flu Vaccine Alert in Bangalore Karnatakaaddon Scans
As flu season approaches, health officials in Bangalore, Karnataka, are urging residents to get their flu vaccinations. The seasonal flu, while common, can lead to severe health complications, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.
Dr. Vidisha Kumari, a leading epidemiologist in Bangalore, emphasizes the importance of getting vaccinated. "The flu vaccine is our best defense against the influenza virus. It not only protects individuals but also helps prevent the spread of the virus in our communities," he says.
This year, the flu season is expected to coincide with a potential increase in other respiratory illnesses. The Karnataka Health Department has launched an awareness campaign highlighting the significance of flu vaccinations. They have set up multiple vaccination centers across Bangalore, making it convenient for residents to receive their shots.
To encourage widespread vaccination, the government is also collaborating with local schools, workplaces, and community centers to facilitate vaccination drives. Special attention is being given to ensuring that the vaccine is accessible to all, including marginalized communities who may have limited access to healthcare.
Residents are reminded that the flu vaccine is safe and effective. Common side effects are mild and may include soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or muscle aches. These side effects are generally short-lived and far less severe than the flu itself.
Healthcare providers are also stressing the importance of continuing COVID-19 precautions. Wearing masks, practicing good hand hygiene, and maintaining social distancing are still crucial, especially in crowded places.
Protect yourself and your loved ones by getting vaccinated. Together, we can help keep Bangalore healthy and safe this flu season. For more information on vaccination centers and schedules, residents can visit the Karnataka Health Department’s official website or follow their social media pages.
Stay informed, stay safe, and get your flu shot today!

to attend the PANLAR
Rheumatology Review Course
5REASONS
By: Dr. Carlo Vinicio Caballero U. - Internist y Rheumatologist PhD Health Communication
President – First PANLAR Rheumatology Review Course
2. 1. Clear objectives: The course is designed to go over topics
that are not common in these type of events. It has an indepen-
dent program that will nonetheless be of interest to all of us who
deal in one way or another with rheumatoid arthritis. This inclu-
des rheumatologists, interested specialists, healthcare person-
nel, patients, auditors and third-party payer. The review of all the
current guides, including LatinAmerican ones, attention access
barriers, the contribution of regional study groups and the action
plan to improve our patients’ attention, will be covered in four
modules. The program is aimedat describing the challenges we
face but, especially, towards exploring and proposing solutions
attuned with the continent’s realities (Click here to download the
program).
2.Teamwork: This event will be the conclusion of a long work
period for the PANLAR work groups. The group of guides for the
excellence clinics, pediatric rheumatology and ultrasound pro-
grams have been working on a wide range of topics: from the
design of the conferences, the preliminary meetings to define
the challenges, onto the conducted perception surveys, and up
to the documents that have been prepared for their publication in
high impact magazines. It has been a coordinated effort that has
involved meetings of all kinds, many emails, adjustments and the
definition of goals. The groups that have undertaken the work will
have the opportunity to present their findings within the event in
spaces designed for the same.
3. It is a breaking point A breaking point refers to the critical
mass required to achieve a novel idea. Hosting a PANLAR course
that reflects the Latin American perspective and the continent’s
proposals constitutes a breaking point. Support for the initiative
has been total in all scenarios where the same has been pre-
sented. Nothing holds truer than that for others to value us, we
need to value ourselves first. The course is an exercise in giving
value to our ideas and thought and a reflection of the increasing
importance of our people, economy and world vision (See the
Leadership lessons from a dancing guy video at the end).
4. There is a new PANLAR: A lot has been written about the
new PANLAR, but for the first time we will see specific facts in
action that speak of the profound change that has been expe-
rienced by all those who participate in PANLAR.There are chan-
ges of form, like the launch of a logo and the new web site during
the event, and others of substance, like the better organization
of the Directive Council, a lot more operative, and in the way
in which events are handled, with an increased participation of
PANLAR at each stage. Equally noteworthy is the impulse being
given to the work of the study groups as central to PANLAR acti-
vities. New rules for the PANLAR groups and events, that will be
revealed during the event, intend to give a specific shape to the
phrase #WeAreAllPanlar.
5. A novel presentation. The PRC will be novel and innovati-
ve in its presentation scheme, development and complementary
aspects. There are many surprises that we will not reveal in anti-
cipation, but that will be discovered by the attendees.
The date for the First PANLAR Rheumatology Review Course (PRC), taking place from April
15 to 17, 2015, in Barranquilla, is approaching. I would like to go over some of the reasons
why it is indispensable for any of the continent’s rheumatologists that are interested in
their specialty to attend this event.
In brief, attendees will have a clear picture of where our continent is headed in terms of the treatment of this pathology, and will
have be able to review the existing challenges but also to contribute to the development of solutions,as well as discovering ways
to participate in PANLAR in order to consolidate the work groups and implement long term action plans. All this while at the same
time enjoying a carefully planned event in order to welcome the beginning of a truly new PANLAR.
We are all invited to be part of the New PANLAR because #WeAreAllPanlar.
Your comments will always be welcome.
I leave you now with the video of the effect of the first follower and of how the breaking point is achieved when we are being
innovative. I hope you will like it. Thanks to all that have helped in one way or another with this event. I do not want to name
anyone in particular, because making this event possible has been a joint effort.
