5 ideas for the home garden
Designing and having ideas for your home garden is not as simple as it may seem. There
are many components to evaluate, from exposure to the sun as regards the choice of plants
to use, to the size of the lot, to the style, finally, that we want to give to our garden. In this
article we will see 5 ideas for designing the home garden, and making it something special.
Minimal garden
Clean lines and simple shapes are the basis of the design of a minimal garden. Color does
not assume the role of characterizing element and catalyst, but rather, thanks to basically
neutral colors, it tends to harmonize the whole and make it a single concept. The use of
water, always defined in regular forms, helps to define the spaces in the garden
ideas for the garden: which plants to choose
Star grass. (Alchemilla Mollis) is a highly regarded and very popular beautiful foliage plant.
Also known as Dew Cloak, Stargrass blooms from June to August with pretty clusters of
yellow flowers. Above all, it is a plant suitable for shaded areas.
boxwood. Buxus sempervirens is an ideal plant for forming low hedges; the boxwood grows
slowly, adapts well to shady positions and to most terrains, while in conditions of excessive
soil humidity and a lot of wind it has difficulty resisting.
Santolina. Santolina chamaecyparissus is a small evergreen shrub. In summer it produces
small, rounded yellow flowers, gathered in apical inflorescences. Ideal as a border plant due
to its very decorative foliage. For an optimal growth of the santolinas it is necessary to plant
the plants in very bright and sunny places.
Eremophila nivea . It belongs to the Scrophulariaceae family and is an evergreen shrub
species. The needle-like and serrated leaves on the edges are reminiscent of rosemary but
are soft and silky to the touch; an epithet of Eremofila is in fact "silk plant". The flowers in the
shape of small purplish blue bells follow one another in the summer season until autumn. It
loves the heat, the sun, resists even prolonged drought and tolerates cold down to -8
degrees.
Vertical garden
One of the most original and less conventional garden ideas is certainly the vertical garden,
which is particularly suitable for terraces, small gardens and home interiors. The great
scenographic impact in fact allows a very varied use within totally different contexts.
If designed for the interior of the house, the benefits produced by the vertical garden are
considerable, both in terms of air quality and internal humidity regulation, and for the ability
to make the environments comfortable and balanced.
ideas for the garden: which plants to choose
Succulent Plants . The best plants for the vertical garden are the succulent ones: the reason
is very easy to guess. In fact, this type of plant needs very little care and is able to adapt
better to any type of climate.
Ivy. Ivy is the climbing and evergreen plant par excellence. It belongs to the Araliaceae
family, to the Hedera genus and is distinguished by various green leaf varieties,
characterized by white verges and yellow streaks. It is a resistant plant, easy to grow and
very versatile thanks to the stem from which the aerial roots branch out.
Red fescue. It is a grass and belongs to the so-called “microthermal” plant species, that is
able to tolerate climates with a large difference in temperatures between them. It is an
ornamental plant that grows without problems and does not require special care.
Geranium. If you want to give a touch of color and liveliness to the vertical garden, the ideal
is to opt for flowers, such as geraniums. In addition to offering splendid inflorescences of
different shades in the summer, these are very resistant plants and need very little care. It is
therefore a perfect plant for those who have little time or don't have a big green thumb.
Shabby garden
Use of pickled wood, pastel colours, coordinated shades and a dreamlike atmosphere and
vintage references. These are mainly the aspects that characterize a Shabby Chic garden.
At first glance, the design and ideas for the Shabby garden will give a general impression of
a compositional disorder, a random gathering of objects scattered here and there. In reality,
the conception of this type of garden requires precise planning and the will to "direct"
attention towards precise scenarios.
ideas for the garden: which plants to choose
Hydrangeas. Hydrangeas are generous, strong and extremely adaptable plants. They love
the shade, but they also grow well in the sun, they live in almost any type of soil and the only
two indispensable conditions for their cultivation are a regular supply of water and good
drainage.
Lavender. Lavender can stand neither heat nor cold. It becomes particularly luxuriant if
planted in areas that are well exposed to the sun and widely ventilated, it does not need
much water and indeed, its massive presence can cause stagnation which is harmful to its
health. It must be watered in moderation.
Herbs. Rosemary ( Rosmarinus officinalis ) and Sage are from thesame family as thyme and
mint, the Lamiaceae. They are plants that love heat and prefer sunny locations. These herbs
are not afraid of drought, but they can have problems if there are situations of prolonged soil
humidity.
English garden
The peculiarity of English gardens lies in a skilful alternation of natural and artificial
elements.
The apparent naturalness is opposed, in reality, to a very artificial design construction. In this
context, decorative elements, fountains, rocks alternate with vegetation, with the sole
purpose of evoking emotions related to the aesthetics of the picturesque and romanticism.
The arrangement of the vegetation itself, with its colours, is inserted trying to recreate the
alternation of the seasons, with the related moods that follow
ideas for the garden: which plants to choose
Rose. Roses are among the most loved flowers in the world due to their delicious scent and
the colors that distinguish them. Roses grow well in all exposures that have good luminosity
and are well ventilated. The most abundant blooms are obtained with exposure to the sun,
but direct rays are not essential for the whole day; it is necessary to avoid transplants under
large trees or close to thick hedges and positions that are perpetually in the shade or with
little light.
Hydrangeas. Hydrangeas are generous, strong and extremely adaptable plants. They love
the shade, but they also grow well in the sun, they live in almost any type of soil and the only
two indispensable conditions for their cultivation are a regular supply of water and good
drainage.
Hornbeam hedges. Hornbeam belongs to the birch family and changes foliage color
throughout the seasons. Suitable for frequent pruning, it lends itself to compositions of any
shape. Mainly used to create magnificent hedges that can even reach a height of 4 meters.
Pansy. Also known as Pensée or Pansè , it is one of the best known and most cultivated
flowering plants for its flowering, it is available at any time of the year and is always very
long-lasting. The preferred climate is the temperate one, tending towards cold and they
prefer a partially shaded position.
Ecological garden
The ecological garden is a garden that finds its principles in a profound respect for the
environment. The direct consequence of this approach is, first of all, the choice of plants and
trees suitable for growing in the area where they will be inserted. The limitation of
interventions, both on plants and on the ground, represents a further guideline to follow.
From the point of view of designing an ecological garden, everything that grows inside it is
considered an element of reuse; the freshly uprooted weeds, for example, will become
useful for fertilizing, while the cut grass, once decomposed, will be an excellent fertilizer.
ideas for the garden: which plants to choose
Mauve. It is a plant belonging to the Malvaceae family, which self-sows easily. Mallow
usually grows spontaneously in uncultivated land, along roadsides, in poorly maintained
gardens
Broom. Beautiful rustic plant that produces simple but very tenacious flowers. It is a plant
with great adaptability and resistance to even the worst bad weather. The broom also takes
root in the most inhospitable, calcareous and stony soils.
Thanks to this article, you have had the opportunity to visualize ideas that are very different
from each other. The space available and the style you want to show define the best
approach and design. Important, as always when it comes to design, is not to improvise
technicians, the result may not be what you expected!
