BP aims to become a great operator by eliminating defects across its operations. It has introduced an operations excellence simulator to help employees understand this approach. The simulator models an upstream operation and shows that reactively fighting issues is less effective than proactively eliminating defects. Teams learn to deploy resources strategically to maintain production while avoiding safety and environmental incidents. Action teams then target real defects identified in simulations to eliminate them within 90 days. BP has also developed tools to support defect elimination and ensure lessons are captured and shared across operations.
