One-fourth of adults under 65 years old in the US reported problems paying medical bills in the past year. Those with lower incomes, without health insurance, or who have a pre-existing health condition were more likely to report problems. Of those who had problems paying medical bills, 59% said it had a major impact on their family, and many engaged in cost-cutting behaviors like reducing spending, increasing debt, or borrowing money to pay medical bills. Additionally, 21% of older adults aged 65 and older also reported difficulties paying medical bills.
