More and more people find Buddhism helpful in finding peace and
happinessamidstthechallengesofthemodernlife.Theestablishment
of the Buddhist Meditation Center of Pittsburgh (BMCP) enhanced
the Buddhist presence in Pittsburgh in a remarkable way. The center
brought rich Thai culture to Buddhist activities in the city. Most
importantly, it brought Thai monks to the city. The arrival of Thai
monks,particularlyBhantePiya,broughtsomuchenergytoBuddhist
activities in the area. I am very grateful for Phramaha Thanat for
startingaBuddhistcenterinPittsburghandsendingThaimonkshere.
As a Theravada Buddhist monk from Sri Lanka, I am very glad that
we have Bhante Piya and other Thai monks in Pittsburgh. We have
worked together to fulfill religious needs of Buddhist people in the
area. During last five years, I observed the kindness of Bhante Piya
to attend to the religious needs of people. He has been very obliging
to many requests received from devotees.

in State Correctional Institutions. He conducts with me a weekly
meditation class at the Pittsburgh prison. He also travels to other
prisons in the state to teach and counsel inmates. He is very eager to
provide study materials and Buddhist books to inmates. I deeply
appreciate his readiness to help inmates in these prisons.
Our annual joint celebration of Vesak ceremony by various
Buddhist groups in the area became a vibrant ceremony with the
participation of BMCP in it. Every year BMCP plays a key role in
organizingVesakceremonyandaddsacolorfulitemtotheceremony.
GenerosityofBMCPinprovidingprintedmaterialsandrefreshments
for this ceremony has greatly been appreciated by other Buddhist
groups.
I am always impressed by the new ideas that Bhante Piya is
having. He is always thinking about new ways to disseminate great
wisdom of the Buddha among general public. He is very thoughtful
of the ways of using new technology for this task. He has been
encouragingourlocalBuddhistgroupstousenewsletters,shortvideos
and social media to reach out to the public. It is very rare to find a
monk who is knowledgeable in both Buddhism and new technology.
We find this rare combination in Bhante Piya.
BMCP is a great blessing to Pittsburgh. I congratulate BMCP
on this fifth anniversary and truly wish the center to grow every year
to benefit many people in the area.

28. 5 Years
Anniversary of BMCP
Over a period lasting almost 27 years, I feel fortunate to have
been able to visit a number of Thai Buddhist temples in various cities
throughoutThailandandtheUnitedStates. Iobservedmanydifferent
ceremonies and always left with a feeling of calm spirituality. There
is a temple in Koh Phangan, Thailand called Wat Kow Tham (http://
www.kowtahm.com/) which I had visited several times. The temple
offered vipassana meditation sessions, but usually required a time
commitment of 10+ days. I never had the time; however, meditation
was on my bucket list.
My wife and I became aware of Wat Padhammaratana shortly
afterthetempleopenedinPittsburgh. Wewerequicklyacceptedinto
the community and I began to discover the difference between being
an observer and being a participant. The temple is also known as the
Buddhist Meditation Center of Pittsburgh, and gradually, the monks
introduced me to vipassana meditation. I have greatly enjoyed and
benefited from information and relationships formed during the last
few years and I look forward to a continued presence in the Wat
Padhammaratanacommunity. Ialsofoundthedharmatalkstobevery

58. The Turning Point
Since the monks moved
in to propagate the Buddha’s
teaching in Pittsburgh in 2011.
Monks and members of the
temple were looking for the
suitable land to build the
permanent temple. In 2013 we
found the land and agree to buy
it. Later on the bank not let us
borrow the money. This project
came to an end.
