Mitosis and meiosis are cell division processes. Mitosis produces two daughter cells that are identical to the parent cell and is used for body cell reproduction and repair. Meiosis produces four daughter cells with half the number of chromosomes and occurs only in sex cells, allowing for genetic variation in offspring. Meiosis has two divisions: Meiosis I separates homologous chromosomes and Meiosis II separates sister chromatids.
