The Community Day Programme recognises that service
users have the right to meaningfully participate in
decision making on the issues affecting them.
We will strive to empower and include all people who
use, or have used drugs, regardless of the types and
routes of drug consumption, by promoting tolerance
and fostering a culture of inclusion, active participation
and personal growth.
Welcome to the Silkworth
Charity Group Community
Day Programme
If you are reading this, then you have first hand experience of
the way in which drug addiction can chip away at an individual’s
happiness, self-confidence, self-worth, family relationships,
motivation and hopes for the future.
Here at the Community Day Programme
we recognise that no-one starts out with an
intention to become addicted to substances,
that addiction is a chronic and complex disease,
which like other diseases requires a period of
treatment, followed by long-term recovery.
Substance misuse is prevalent in Jersey;
alcohol consumption is twice that of the UK
and one of the highest in Europe. Additionally,
a recent report on ‘The Nature, Extent, Impact
and Response to Illicit Drug Use in Jersey’
found that 1.4% of Jersey’s population aged
15-64 have substance misuse issues. That
figure compares to 0.85% in the UK and
1.6% in Scotland (McKeganey et al., 2015).
In light of the high rates of substance misuse
in Jersey, the Silkworth Charity Group has
founded a Community Day Programme
which will provide a safe and supportive
environment focusing on a client-centred,
collaborative approach to recovery. This
approach to recovery puts the individual at the
centre of their journey and encourages those
who use the service to play a lead role in its
development, how it looks, feels and operates.
I now have a life that I never
thought would have been possible.

What is Recovery?
The term recovery has grown in both the US and the
UK over recent years it refers to the process of building
a satisfying and meaningful life, as defined by the
person themselves (UK Drug Policy Commission, 2008).
The Community Day Programme is open to both those who have already
achieved abstinence, and those who are currently working towards positive
change. We recognise that addiction can isolate an individual from their family,
friends and the community as a whole, and we are also aware of the significant
negative impact addiction can have on an individual’s identity and self-worth.
Our goal is to support individual’s to build Recovery Capital, which refers to
the resources an individual can draw upon to initiate and sustain recovery
from addiction.
The four components of Recovery Capital are;
“Although I am only a few
months into my recovery, it has
been a life changer for me. It
has allowed me to reclaim most
of my life back after decades of
drug and alcohol abuse. I am
beginning to feel human again.”

The purpose of building Recovery Capital is to enable an individual to
move-on from their addiction in a positive way through the achievement
of a healthy, happy and meaningful life. Areas of an individual’s life that were
once neglected are brought back into focus, including physical health, positive
self-identity, family relationships and employment. We encourage individuals
to play a productive and meaningful role in society, knowing that by doing so
it will increase their motivation and confidence to maintain positive change.

‘Recovery Mentors prove a great help to both the staff
and clients.  They are role models, promoting life
AFTER addiction. Recovery Mentors gain knowledge and
experience, structure and routine, a raised self esteem
and confidence, a sense of belonging and productiveness,
as well as training and a reference.’
Katie Thompson, Eastern Region’s Best Recovery Mentor 2011
‘For People in Recovery,
by People in Recovery’
The Community Day Programme aims to incorporate
the views and opinions of its service users into treatment.
We recognise and acknowledge the
importance of volunteers in establishing a
recovery community and we also know that it
is often easier to talk about addiction with
those who have lived it. Our goal is to recruit
a number of ‘Recovery Mentors’ who will
provide practical support and guidance to
those seeking to make positive change. The
purpose of this approach is to provide visible
recovery in action, whereby individuals can
observe and learn from those further along the
recovery journey, increasing their own personal
motivation and proving that success is possible
for all who meaningfully engage in the process.

“Recovery has taught me how to
face my problems and be proud of
myself everyday. I have met people
who understand me and who I can
trust. I can be myself and live my
life. I am alive.”

Do I have to be abstinent to attend the Day Programme?
No, The Community Day Programme welcomes all individuals who are seeking to
make positive change to their substance misuse. Whether you are currently in
recovery or seeking recovery there is a place for you at the Programme. We ask
that all individuals who access the service respect that this is a place of recovery,
and as such our only requirement for attendance at the programme is that
individuals do not attend the service under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
We feel it is important that the service is a safe place for all, no matter what
stage of recovery they are in.
Do I have to attend every day?
The Community Day Programme is a place for individuals to access as and when
they need it. Whilst we would love to see individuals on a daily basis, we
recognise that this is not always possible due to life commitments. We certainly
would encourage individuals to attend as often as possible in order to stay
connected to their recovery journey.
Do you offer substitute prescribing?
The Community Day Programme does not offer substitute prescribing. Any individual
who is currently receiving a Methadone, Subutex or Suboxone prescription would
need to continue their attendance at the Alcohol & Drug Service.
Is the Community Day Programme 12-step?
Our service is focused on individual recovery and as such we are not treatment
specific. 12-step meetings will be run in the space, as will SMART Recovery which
is a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy based approach to abstinence recovery. We
believe in supporting individuals to find their own recovery route and encourage
individual’s to engage in what works for them.
What is a Service User Forum?
A service user forum is a meeting which is attended by any and all individual’s who
are accessing the Community Day Programme. The purpose of these meetings is
to discuss the development of the service and gain feedback from service users
regarding what is, and is not, working for them. The Community Day Programme
is responsive to the needs of the community it serves and we recognise the
importance of incorporating a service user voice into our service development.
Do I have to complete any paperwork to attend?
The Community Day Programme will offer drop-in services alongside structured
psycho-social interventions. If you are attending the service but not engaging in any
groups or one-to-one key working then you will not have to complete any paperwork.
Due to issues of client safeguarding and professional accountability, any individual
who attends the structured group programmes or one-to-one key working will need to
complete an initial assessment with the substance misuse therapist. This is to ensure
that your treatment journey is individualised and responsive to your needs in recovery.

  • 1. Silkworth Charity Group Community Day Programme Accessing a safe and supportive environment for your recovery. An information booklet from Silkworth Charity Group, the recognised leader in drug and alcohol treatment providers in the Channel Islands © 2015 Silkworth Charity Group
  • 2. The Community Day Programme recognises that service users have the right to meaningfully participate in decision making on the issues affecting them. We will strive to empower and include all people who use, or have used drugs, regardless of the types and routes of drug consumption, by promoting tolerance and fostering a culture of inclusion, active participation and personal growth. Welcome to the Silkworth Charity Group Community Day Programme If you are reading this, then you have first hand experience of the way in which drug addiction can chip away at an individual’s happiness, self-confidence, self-worth, family relationships, motivation and hopes for the future. Here at the Community Day Programme we recognise that no-one starts out with an intention to become addicted to substances, that addiction is a chronic and complex disease, which like other diseases requires a period of treatment, followed by long-term recovery. Substance misuse is prevalent in Jersey; alcohol consumption is twice that of the UK and one of the highest in Europe. Additionally, a recent report on ‘The Nature, Extent, Impact and Response to Illicit Drug Use in Jersey’ found that 1.4% of Jersey’s population aged 15-64 have substance misuse issues. That figure compares to 0.85% in the UK and 1.6% in Scotland (McKeganey et al., 2015). In light of the high rates of substance misuse in Jersey, the Silkworth Charity Group has founded a Community Day Programme which will provide a safe and supportive environment focusing on a client-centred, collaborative approach to recovery. This approach to recovery puts the individual at the centre of their journey and encourages those who use the service to play a lead role in its development, how it looks, feels and operates. I now have a life that I never thought would have been possible. © 2015 Silkworth Charity Group © 2015 Silkworth Charity Group
  • 3. What is Recovery? The term recovery has grown in both the US and the UK over recent years it refers to the process of building a satisfying and meaningful life, as defined by the person themselves (UK Drug Policy Commission, 2008). The Community Day Programme is open to both those who have already achieved abstinence, and those who are currently working towards positive change. We recognise that addiction can isolate an individual from their family, friends and the community as a whole, and we are also aware of the significant negative impact addiction can have on an individual’s identity and self-worth. Our goal is to support individual’s to build Recovery Capital, which refers to the resources an individual can draw upon to initiate and sustain recovery from addiction. The four components of Recovery Capital are; “Although I am only a few months into my recovery, it has been a life changer for me. It has allowed me to reclaim most of my life back after decades of drug and alcohol abuse. I am beginning to feel human again.” Human Capital Health and Wellbeing Cultural Capital Identity, Culture & Values Social Capital Family and Community, Social Network Physical & Economic Capital Housing, Wealth, Crime & Employment The purpose of building Recovery Capital is to enable an individual to move-on from their addiction in a positive way through the achievement of a healthy, happy and meaningful life. Areas of an individual’s life that were once neglected are brought back into focus, including physical health, positive self-identity, family relationships and employment. We encourage individuals to play a productive and meaningful role in society, knowing that by doing so it will increase their motivation and confidence to maintain positive change. © 2015 Silkworth Charity Group © 2015 Silkworth Charity Group
  • 4. ‘Recovery Mentors prove a great help to both the staff and clients.  They are role models, promoting life AFTER addiction. Recovery Mentors gain knowledge and experience, structure and routine, a raised self esteem and confidence, a sense of belonging and productiveness, as well as training and a reference.’ Katie Thompson, Eastern Region’s Best Recovery Mentor 2011 ‘For People in Recovery, by People in Recovery’ The Community Day Programme aims to incorporate the views and opinions of its service users into treatment. We recognise and acknowledge the importance of volunteers in establishing a recovery community and we also know that it is often easier to talk about addiction with those who have lived it. Our goal is to recruit a number of ‘Recovery Mentors’ who will provide practical support and guidance to those seeking to make positive change. The purpose of this approach is to provide visible recovery in action, whereby individuals can observe and learn from those further along the recovery journey, increasing their own personal motivation and proving that success is possible for all who meaningfully engage in the process. © 2015 Silkworth Charity Group © 2015 Silkworth Charity Group “Recovery has taught me how to face my problems and be proud of myself everyday. I have met people who understand me and who I can trust. I can be myself and live my life. I am alive.”

  • 6. Do I have to be abstinent to attend the Day Programme? No, The Community Day Programme welcomes all individuals who are seeking to make positive change to their substance misuse. Whether you are currently in recovery or seeking recovery there is a place for you at the Programme. We ask that all individuals who access the service respect that this is a place of recovery, and as such our only requirement for attendance at the programme is that individuals do not attend the service under the influence of drugs and alcohol. We feel it is important that the service is a safe place for all, no matter what stage of recovery they are in. Do I have to attend every day? The Community Day Programme is a place for individuals to access as and when they need it. Whilst we would love to see individuals on a daily basis, we recognise that this is not always possible due to life commitments. We certainly would encourage individuals to attend as often as possible in order to stay connected to their recovery journey. Do you offer substitute prescribing? The Community Day Programme does not offer substitute prescribing. Any individual who is currently receiving a Methadone, Subutex or Suboxone prescription would need to continue their attendance at the Alcohol & Drug Service. Is the Community Day Programme 12-step? Our service is focused on individual recovery and as such we are not treatment specific. 12-step meetings will be run in the space, as will SMART Recovery which is a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy based approach to abstinence recovery. We believe in supporting individuals to find their own recovery route and encourage individual’s to engage in what works for them. What is a Service User Forum? A service user forum is a meeting which is attended by any and all individual’s who are accessing the Community Day Programme. The purpose of these meetings is to discuss the development of the service and gain feedback from service users regarding what is, and is not, working for them. The Community Day Programme is responsive to the needs of the community it serves and we recognise the importance of incorporating a service user voice into our service development. Do I have to complete any paperwork to attend? The Community Day Programme will offer drop-in services alongside structured psycho-social interventions. If you are attending the service but not engaging in any groups or one-to-one key working then you will not have to complete any paperwork. Due to issues of client safeguarding and professional accountability, any individual who attends the structured group programmes or one-to-one key working will need to complete an initial assessment with the substance misuse therapist. This is to ensure that your treatment journey is individualised and responsive to your needs in recovery. Frequently asked questions © 2015 Silkworth Charity Group © 2015 Silkworth Charity Group
