1. Introduction
A completely new level of efficiency for design development in shipbuilding and floating offshore projects

AVEVA Marine provides a full set of applications that covers all design disciplines and sets new, high levels
of productivity for the creation and modification of design data.

• AVEVA Marine has a vastly enhanced outfit modelling capability with full 3D interface that provides a
large increase in productivity. A graphical handle is introduced which enhances greatly the positioning
and manipulation of objects within the 3D model.
• Data Management capabilities are is built into the ship model database unlike Tribon where these are
within a separate module.
• Productive use of all modules is improved by introducing a new, uniform Graphical User Interface
(GUI). This includes undo and redo capabilities. The number of working steps for individual functions
has been minimized. These also contribute to increases in productive use.
• Advanced customization tools are included that use Microsoft .NET technology. This extended set of
tools allows the use of the system to be tailored to suit particular in‐house processes.
• Tribon legacy data can be migrated into AVEVA Marine. Design data from other systems can be
migrated also via standard protocols.
• AVEVA Marine has one unified database using the proven Dabacon database. Compared to the Tribon
database, Dabacon creates man‐hour savings by providing:
o Data Management on the object level including the model object version
o Distributed on‐line, multiple‐site working
o On‐line clash detection during modelling
o Design changes highlighted on drawings by comparison with previously stored versions
o Rollback of the database to a particular time to undo saved changes

2. AVEVA Design Platform
A very important aspect in the development of AVEVA Marine is the use of the AVEVA Design Platform as
illustrated below:

The key features of the AVEVA Design Platform include:
2.1 Overview
• AVEVA Design Platform provides a fully interactive, easy‐to‐use 3D environment for every design on
the project, supported by a Microsoft Office‐style .user interface based on .Net technology and the
latest in 3D graphical interaction tools.
• As the designers work with their specialist functions, they have visibility of the entire design at all
times. To create their part of the design they place instances of parametric components from a
catalogue (under the control of engineering specifications) and, in doing so, they construct a highly
intelligent AVEVA Design Platform database.
• Clash checking and configurable integrity checking rules identify errors and inconsistencies across the
design.
• A wide range of project reports and drawings can be produced directly from the AVEVA Design
Platform database using specialist and highly configurable AVEVA Design Platform applications, with
high levels of automation available.
• Hundreds of users can all work together in a manner where everything is properly controlled.
• Conventional issue, revision, and change control processes can all be applied without introducing a
large overhead or delays.
• AVEVA Design Platform is highly configurable and has many configuration options including a powerful
programmable macro language (PML) that can be used to customise the system and automate key
activities across all areas of the product.

2.2 Design and Modification
• State‐of‐the‐art 3D editing features with graphical handles and numeric feedback make design and
modification quick and easy.
• Quick input techniques such as automatic pipe routing and the use of standard assemblies increase
productivity.
• Built‐in intelligence, combined with configurable rules and associations, ensure that designers are
highly productive during all design and modification activities.
• Design rules created between plant items (for example, to link a range of pipes to a penetration or to
ensure that a piece of equipment is correctly located over supporting beams) can be rechecked
automatically at any time during the design.
• Design and component information from earlier AVEVA Design Platform projects can be reused or
shared across multiple projects. Utilities to change pipe size or specification enable rapid modification
to adjust to new project conditions.
• A general import function from MS Excel allows large volumes of data from external sources to be
analysed on line and bulk‐loaded into the design.
• The standard AVEVA Design Platform design applications can be customised to fit individual industry or
project requirements, or to add further design rules or automation into the design process.
• Undo and Redo facilities are widely available. Whole or part projects can be rewound to any previous
state.
2.3 Drawings and Reports
• A wide range of layout and detail engineering drawings are available across all disciplines.
• All drawings are produced directly from the AVEVA Design Platform database. The annotation and
dimensions on these drawings are also generated directly from the database, ensuring high levels of
consistency between documents and design.
• Drawing updates automatically include the latest design changes. Automatic change highlighting can
be used to communicate changes.
• Many drawings, such as piping isometrics can be generated entirely automatically.
• Drawings are available in AutoCAD‐ and MicroStation‐compatible formats.
• Flexible reporting capabilities enable all types of reports and schedules to be produced direct from the
AVEVA Design Platform database, such as valve or nozzle schedules, which can be produced in CSV or
other formats.
• Accurate Material Take Off (MTO) information is available across all disciplines by item, unit, area and
so on.
• Reporting options include surface area, weight and centre of gravity.
2.4 Catalogues and Specifications
• An extensive set of catalogues covering industry, national and international standards is available,
including piping, structural steel, ducting, hangers, supports and cable trays.
• Each catalogue provides the parametric definition of all components in the required size ranges, ratings
and types. So, for piping component data, related to connection types, physical and nominal size,
material codes and bolt requirements are all stored.
• Engineering specifications control the way in which components from the catalogues may be used in
the design.
• Standard catalogues can be defined once and shared across multiple projects.
• New catalogue items, for instance for project specials, can easily be created by the user.
• Controlled changes to component and specifications are quick and easy and there are many functions
to manage, control and apply changes such changes across the design.
2.5 Management and Control
• AVEVA Design Platform is designed to support large teams of designers working together in a
controlled and managed way. It has sophisticated and highly configurable access and change control

tools to allow the system to be tailored for an enormous variety of engineering work practices and
project situations.
• Work breakdown structures can be changed in line with the evolving project needs, for example, to
adapt to changes when building contracts are awarded.
• With the use of AVEVA Global, the standard AVEVA Design Platform capabilities can be extended to
manage an AVEVA Design Platform project across geographically separate locations.
2.6 Change Management
• Session management capabilities enable project roll‐back to any previous configuration of a project.
This is possible because the model database grows by adding layers of data, from each session, that
record the parts of the model changed during the session. This also means that the full change history
of any part of the model can be shown.
• Change highlighting facilities mean that modelling and drawing changes from a previous version, or
from a specific date and time in the past, can be displayed on screen or in drawings in highlighted
colours. Reports of changes can also be created.
2.7 Quality Checking
• Automatic multi‐discipline clash detection is available for designers while modelling, and detailed clash
reports can also be created on demand. A separate product,
• AVEVA Clash Management is available to support the management actions involved in approving and
resolving clashes.
• Data consistency checks of the model are made for correct alignment of components and correct
connections between components.
• Customer‐defined engineering data checks are available to ensure the design is in accordance with
design rules and project and company quality standards.
• Association rules built into the design model, for example to locate electrical cabinets in line with
bulkhead penetrations can be validated at any time.
2.8 Localisation
• Feet/inches and metric units are available throughout.
• An extensive range of international character sets can be used for data, catalogues, drawings, reports
and user interface.
2.9 Customization and Configuration
• There is a customizable graphical user interface and powerful object‐oriented macro language for
customizing the operation of the system to fit the needs of any particular project or workflow, to add
custom automation functions or to create interfaces with in‐house or third‐party applications.
• An open programming environment allows customers to develop their own applications on top of the
standard AVEVA Marine. The .NET technology means that these applications can be written in any
compatible .NET language, such as C or C++, plus the programmable macro language (PML).
• There is Tribon Vitesse Legacy Support for Hull and Drafting.
2.10 Integration and Interfacing
• In addition to integration with all AVEVA Plant products, a variety of interfaces to analysis systems,
drafting systems and third‐party design systems are available.
• A wide range of data exchange formats are supported, including DXF, DGN, SDNF and CSV plus STEP
AP203.

3. AVEVA Marine products
The following modules are in the AVEVA Marine portfolio.
3.1 Initial Design
Initial Design Geometry is used for hull surface geometry modelling and compartment definition. Initial
Design is integrated with the other AVEVA Marine design applications. On‐going system developments
include the use of this initial hull geometry model together with the compartment definition, being be used
as the reference geometry for the downstream detailed design processes in the other AVEVA Marine
products.

Initial Design Hydrostatics has a set of ship design tools for naval architectural analysis for hydrostatics
calculations. This includes stability and capacity calculations, calculation of structural loads, bending
moments and shear force, grain stability, probabilistic stability, launching calculations, inclining
calculations, and continuous flooding.

Initial Design Hydrodynamics has a set of ship design tools for naval architectural analysis for
hydrodynamics calculations. This includes powering, manoeuvring, seakeeping, and dynamic positioning.

Major benefits of these are that the detailed design definition process can begin earlier even while design‐
analysis is continuing. Changes to the hull form and the positions of bulkheads and decks are transferred to
the detailed design definition and the detailed ship’s structure is re‐generated. Changes made to the
positions of bulkheads and decks made during the detailed design definition process are transferred back
for re‐analysis.
3.2 AVEVA Diagrams
AVEVA Diagrams has similar capabilities to the older Tribon Diagrams module but now includes many
enhancements and new capabilities. Such additions include:
• The design data is stored within the Dabacon database allowing parallel, controlled working
• It is easy to compare the data within the diagrams and in the detailed, 3D design (3D) model and also
vice versa
• AVEVA Diagrams uses the AVEVA Marine common framework, i.e. same window, menu set, tree view,
etc.
• The creation of HVAC diagrams in included
• The creation of electrical diagrams in included
• Default, attribute values , e.g. a component reference, can be added to symbols
• Attribute values can be added as labels
• Off‐Page connectors are available when required
• Several other new functions and features

AVEVA Diagrams has been designed to be easy to use and allowing design engineers use it efficiently during
the early, concept design stages. The diagrams created at this stage are then developed further at later
design stages ensuring compatibility with the detailed 3D design model being created in parallel.
3.3 AVEVA Diagram / 3D Integrator
AVEVA P&ID 3D Integrator provides synchronisation between the data within the diagrams and the data
within the 3D model.
The 3D models can be built directly for the data within the diagrams.
Should further data be added or changed within the diagrams or directly within the 3D model, the
Integrator can be used at any time to check their consistence.

The Integrator provides major savings in both man‐hours and elapse time due to the more efficient building
of the 3D model, gained by direct using diagram data. The shared environment highlights and manages
potential design inconsistency between the diagrams and the 3D model data allowing and inconsistencies
to be corrected accurately and quickly.
A final comparison between the diagrams and the 3D model before the drawings and engineering
documents are released for fabrication ensures that these are in accordance with the latest design. This
minimizes the opportunities mistakes in fabrication necessitating costly re‐work.
The high quality of the data contributes to more efficient commissioning, for the use in the ship’s
operation, for maintenance and future modifications.
3.4 Hull Structural Design
AVEVA Marine Hull Structural Design corresponds to Tribon Basic Design. There are additional capabilities
including:
• Hull Structural Design uses the AVEVA Marine common framework, i.e. same window, menu set, tree
view, etc.
• The two‐way transfer of design data with the Initial Design
• The use of parametric surfaces
• The capability to obtain and to use the intersection between surfaces
• Panel modelling on a selection of panels
• Block modelling
• Paint area calculation can be based also on the compartment definition
3.5 Hull Detailed Design
AVEVA Marine Hull Detailed Design corresponds to Tribon Hull. There are additional capabilities including:

• Hull Detailed Design uses the AVEVA Marine common framework, i.e. same window, menu set, tree
view, etc.
• There are many, enhanced checks on piece‐parts to ensure that they are manufactured correctly, e.g.
correct edge bevel, marking, weld shrinkage, etc.
• An interactive jig handling capability is included whereby a model is rotated to the optimum fabrication
orientation and the jig data defined automatically to suit
• Jigs can be defined to handle knuckled panels
• Hole management capability ensures compatibility between outfitting, e.g. pipes, and the holes in the
steel structure
• Steel structure defined within the outfitting process, e.g. seats, walkways, etc, can be integrated with
the ship’s structure for pipe part manufacturing
• Further enhancements are made to the edge bevelling capability
• Potential customization is made easier by the introduction of the proven, high‐capability Program
Macro Language (PML) and the .NET interface

The above all provide much higher productivity in the detailed design process, the generation of
manufacturing and fabrication output data and to the shop‐floor production and assembly processes. In
addition to these, many enhancements are made to improve all levels of functionality.
3.6 Hull Options
Hull Detailed Design has similar options to those available in Tribon Hull.

These optional capabilities create the highly accurate numerical control information needed for automation
equipment such as panel lines, cutting and welding robots. Advanced assembly‐marking triangles are yet
another option to maximize the accuracy.

3.7 Hull Drafting

Hull Drafting is the equivalent to Drafting within Tribon Hull.

Enhancements have also been made to improve productivity, e.g. functions for the automatic creation of
symbolic‐type hull drawings from the model database and to general 2D drafting functions.
3.8 Outfitting
AVEVA Marine Outfitting, based upon the proven PDMS technology, is a major enhancement compared to
Tribon Outfitting.

AVEVA Outfitting is an integrated, data‐centric and multi‐disciplined design and drafting environment for
the creation of production information for vessels. At its core a customer defined catalogue and
specification enables rule‐based design association with tools to ensure a clash‐free and data consistent
design. Comprehensive Outfitting modules include the design of equipment, piping, miscellaneous steel
structures and cable trays. A comprehensive range of outfitting deliverables can be produced automatically
from the 3D model including dimensioned and annotated drawings, material take‐off reports, piping
isometrics and production information.

Capabilities new in AVEVA Outfitting Include:
• Full clash checking including both interactive and batch mode, and also hard and used‐defined soft
clashing
• Change Management including change history and change highlighting
• Parametric design of equipment
• Automatic and interactive pipe routing
• Catalogue management
• Specification management
• Association, e.g. between equipment and seats, etc.
3.9 Multi Discipline Supports (MDS)
Multi‐Discipline Supports enables the detailed design, material take off and automated drawing production
of supports for piping, ducting and cable trays. A comprehensive range of standards are included, in
addition to user‐defined catalogue customisation

3.10 HVAC
HVAC is effectively a new capability within AVEVA Marine, particularly compared to the very limited
capability within Tribon.

HVAC modelling is fast and efficient with parametric catalogue items being positioned and the
interconnecting ducts being generated. Insulation can be added.

Vast number of HVAC catalogue items available, including:
• Transitions
• Dampers
• Spiro duct

• Offsets
• Intelligence of flow direction when modelling
• Grid/tiling facility for accommodation areas
• Consistency checks
• Hole management
3.11 Cable
AVEVA Marine Cable corresponds to Tribon Cable. Cable capability concentrates of the 3D model aspects of
electrical systems. It is recommended that Cable is used together with AVEVA Diagrams although this is not
a prerequisite.

The 3D design process is similar, for example:
1. Cableways are defined throughout the ship, i.e. spaces are reserved for cables, with penetrations and
route nodes being defined
2. Individual cables are located within these cableways
3. Cable trays are defined to particular standards

There are additional capabilities within Cable including:

• Diagrams in ISO15926, for example for equipment and system supply companies, can be integrated
with those created within AVEVA Diagrams and their data used to build the 3D model
• The cable tray components are defined automatically to a selected manufacturer’s standard
• Cables can be routed interactively and/or automatically along the cableways, the latter using the data
from the diagram
• Cables can be segregated automatically depending on their function
• Checks are made automatically on cableway fill levels and on penetration fill levels
• Cable length with optional excess is calculated and output
• Cable route information, e.g. via node points, is output
• Production information is created for cutting and installation of cables
3.12 Automatic Drawing Production
This is capability new to AVEVA Marine.

All drawings, including their annotation and dimensions, are produced directly from the model database,
ensuring consistency between documents and design. Updates to drawings automatically include the latest
design changes.

This is very major enhancement to productivity.
3.13 Catalogues and Specifications
AVEVA Marine has an extensive set of catalogues available, covering industry, national and international
standards, and including piping, structural steel, ducting, hangers, supports and cable trays. Each catalogue
provides parametric definition of all components in the required size ranges, ratings and types. So, for
piping component connection types, physical and nominal size, material codes and bolt requirements are
all stored

3.14 Room Design

Room Design is new with AVEVA Marine and there is no comparable capability within Tribon M series albeit
there was some basic accommodation capability within the old Unix‐based Tribon.

AVEVA Room Design is currently an on‐going development for defining the layout and content of ship’s
cabins, restaurants, galleys, etc. Accommodation elements such as partition bulkheads, doors, deck
covering, furniture, etc. are defined and positioned.
3.15 AVEVA Pipe Stress Interface
Pipe Stress Interface provides a two‐way interface for the exchange of data between AVEVA Marine
Outfitting pipe definition data and the CAESAR II pipe stress system.

Piping designers and stress engineers can exchange design and stress data seamlessly, without duplicating
information.
3.16 Assembly Planning
AVEVA Marine Assembly Planning is comparable to Tribon Assembly Planning.

Assembly Planning is used to replicate the ship’s Product Work Breakdown Structure (PWBS), based upon
the shipyard’s Build Strategy. This is represented by a tree. As the ship is defined, the system creates
automatically the as‐designed tree structure. Such tree structures are created as per discipline, i.e.
hierarchies for Hull, Pipe systems, HVAC systems, Cable systems, etc. A to‐be‐built tree structure is then
created interactively to represent the optimum PWBS. For example steel structure can be represented as
Ship, Blocks, Units, Sub Assemblies and Piece‐parts. The steel structure and the outfitting objects, e.g.
equipment, pipes and fittings, are often combined to define outfit units (or modules) that will be fabricated
in the workshops prior to installing on‐board.

New to the AVEVA Marine Assembly Planning is the capability to define the fabrication sequence. This can
be animated graphically to help achieve the optimum sequence thus reducing the time for fabrication.

Assembly fabrication drawings are generated automatically in a new, powerful, automatic drawing tool.
These are based upon a customized template ensuring that the correct information is displayed.
3.17 Weld Planning
AVEVA Marine Weld Planning is comparable to Tribon Weld Planning.

Weld planning is used to identify all of the un‐welded joints in a steel fabrication. Depending upon the
thicknesses and the joint orientation, the system defines the correct weld process , based upon the
shipyard’s standards, and the weld size.

This is a highly productive, accurate capability.
3.18 Finite Element Analysis interface
This is effectively new to AVEVA Marine compared to the very limited capability within Tribon.

AVEVA Structural Analysis Management within Structural Design application which is a tool that provides
functionality that supports idealization of a structural model in a fully customizable and automatic way. The
idealized model can be visualized and modified. The idealized model is converted into a geometry model
that is in a pre‐meshed state suitable for transfer into external FEM software packages.

This is an on‐going development interfacing to different FEA packages and to Classification Society systems.

3.19 Review
Review is new in AVEVA Marine.

Review can view an AVEVA Marine model from the ship’s model database for walkthrough and visualisation
capabilities. It also includes the capability to define equipment withdrawal routes and animates such
withdrawals. Interactive clash checking can be used to with this capability.
3.20 Clash Manager
Clash manager is new in AVEVA Marine.

AVEVA Clash Manager enhances the in‐built clash capability of AVEVA Outfitting through, managed
approval process. It also provides comprehensive recording, trend analysis, identification, management and
the resolution of clashes through an approval mechanism. Clash Manager reports on clashes, status, history
and the discipline allocated to resolve each clash. This enables the administrator or user to prioritise,
control and monitor the work involved in the resolution of all clashes.

3.21 Laser Model Interface
Laser scanning is used to create accurate 3D models of compartments already built. The scanned data,
referred to as a point cloud, is converted into a fully functional AVEVA Marine 3D model. This model can
then be modified as required and the requisite drawings and production information output.

Laser scanning is particularly beneficial for use on existing ships in need of a re‐fit or conversion. This is a
fast, accurate and cost effective method of capturing the current design. The Laser Model Interface
facilitates the creation of the AVEVA Marine 3D model.
3.22 Global
Global is new in AVEVA Marine.

AVEVA Global expands the capabilities of companies involved in multi‐location or distributed project
execution using AVEVA’s systems. Global enables the effective sharing of design information with other
offices, subcontractors, vendors and others, whilst retaining project and system control. Global provides
concurrent, distributed 3D marine design with central project administration, allows for flexibility with
control, offers fast performance and is tolerant of communication faults.
