EFFECTIVE
TEACHING

Background
As an educator we need to acknowledge the changing
focus and role of the teacher within education, recognise
the role students play in achieving their own learning
needs in style and mode that best suit them and undestand
the relationship each has on achieving intended learning
outcomes individually and profesionally

Today’s Topic
What is the defenition of
effective teaching?
What is the
principles of
effective teaching?
What are the
characteristics of

Defenition of the Effective
Teaching
Let’s start with the first set of slides 14
Defenition of the effective
teaching
Kenneth Feldman (1988) did a meta-analysis of 31
studies in which teachers and students identified
characteristics they associated with good teaching
and effective instruction. He found that students
emphasized the importance of teachers being
interesting, having good communication skills, being
available, and helpful.

“
Effective teaching is about helping
your students to achieve the best
results they can at school.

Principles of the Effective
Teaching
Let’s start with the first set of slides 27
Principles of the effective
teaching
Paul Ramsden (2003) in his book Learning to
Teach in Higher Education, he divides the
principle of effective teaching into six
principles based on student relations with
their experience
8
1. Interest and explanation
◉ Make the subject matter interesting.
◉ Arouse student curiosity.
◉ Provide clear explanations and remember to clarify
the reasons why a particular fact or skill is essential
for understanding the whole.
9
Principles of the effective
teaching
2. Concern and respect for students and
student learning
◉ Be generous and give students the benefit of the
doubt.
◉ Challenge students, but simultaneously make it easy
for them to master the ideas and facts.
10
Principles of the effective
teaching
3. Apprioriate assessment and feedback
◉ Set the right assessment and match them to the
material to be learned.
◉ Question students in a way that demands evidence
of understanding.
◉ Ensure feedback focuses on what they still need to
study to get it right.
11
Principles of the effective
teaching
4. Clear goal and intellectual challenge
◉ Consistent high academic expectations produce
better student performance.
◉ Provide clear statements of course goals, student
expectations and efforts, teacher expectations and
efforts.
12
Principles of the effective
teaching
5. Independence, control and active
engagement
◉ Ensure content is engaging and delivered in way to
reach understanding.
◉ Allow students the space to learn at their own pace
and their own sequence.
◉ Provide a balance between students feeling in
control of their learning and well supported with
teacher direction.
13
Principles of the effective
teaching
6. Learning from students
◉ Evaluation of teaching practices highlights
successes, challenges and identifies modifications to
create more effective teaching practices.
14
Principles of the effective
teaching
Characteristics of the Effective
Teacher
Let’s start with the first set of slides 315
Characteristics of the Effective
Teacher
Sharyn O’neill (2009) explain there are 8
characteristic that must be possessed by
effective teacher
16
Characteristics of the Effective
Teacher
Having high
expectations
Acknowledging
individual differences
Using a range of
pedagogies
Encouraging students
responsibility
Having mastery of
their teaching content
Providing a safe
environment
17
Monitoring progress
and providing
feedback
Building positive
relationships
Conclusion
Effective teaching is more than the transfer of
knowledge and skills possessed by the teacher to
students, but effective teaching also ensures that
the learning that the previous student has can
increase so that students can learn to analyze,
develop, create, and understand the learning.
Students also have the initiative to continue to
learn and develop as independent learners.

learning

Editor's Notes

  • #9 Buat materi pelajaran menarik. Bangkitkan keingintahuan siswa.
