The Mexican muralists and US Social Realist artists of the 1930s retreated from radical modernist innovations to create art that was more effective at relating political and social messages to the public. Surrealist art aimed to liberate the unconscious mind by incorporating unconscious thoughts and dreams into their works. Dada art was seen as closely related to Surrealism due to its rejection of logic and emphasis on irrationality and nonsense.
