The realm of product design is a constantly changing environment where technology and style intersect. Every year introduces fresh challenges and exciting trends that mold the future of this captivating art form. In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

pettunud ajakirjanduses. Varem oli Lippmanni seisukoht, et
ajakirjandus kirjeldab elu nagu see on. Pärast rindereporterina
töötamist avaldas Lippmann arvamust, et inimkonna kõige
ebaõnnestunum leiutis on pressikonverents. Kui varem võtsid
inimesed ajalehe, et näha, mis on juhtunud, siis läinud sajandi
alguses oli lugejaile selgeks, et ajalehest saab teada vaid seda, mida
leht kirjutab. Jumala loodud sündmuste asemele oli tulnud
ajakirjanduse loodud sündmused. Avalikkusel polegi enam oma
arvamust, vaid see on solgitud ajakirjanduse poolt. Meedia edastab
loosungeid ja stereotüüpe. Lippmann märgib samas, et mõjutamine
on kahepoolne protsess.
19. • Maailma esimene suhtekorraldajate
organisatsioon loodi 1917. aastal Ameerikas.
Organisatsioon tegutseb tänini.
Suhtekorralduse muutumisel
professionaalseks tegevuseks on olulisel kohal
Ameerika Suhtekorraldajate Assotsiatsiooni
eetikakoodeksi vastuvõtmine 1954. aastal ja
vabatahtliku akredeteerimise juurutamine
1964.aastal.
20. • 1948. aastal asutati Inglismaal
InstituteofPublicRelations. Kasvas välja
Kuninglikust Turundus Nõukogust.
Erialaühendus koostas eetikakoodeksi ja
litsenseerimisprogrammi.
21. Mis on mõjutanud kaasaegse
suhtekorralduse teket?
Iga legaalne ettevõtlus saab toimuda
vaid avalikkuse loal ja toel
suhtekorraldus on juhtimise vahend
ettevõtted peavad tegema kindlaks,
mida sihtgrupid soovivad ja vastavalt
sellele käituma
23. Suhtekorralduse ajakoos on olnud 3 etappi:
• manipuleerimine
• informeerimine
• järjepidev kahepoolne kommunikatsioon ja
heatahtlik suhtumine
24. • Manipulatsioon tähendab avalikkuse
poolehoiu võitmist igasuguste vahenditega.
PR spetsialiste selles staadiumis kutsuti
pressiagentideks. Manipuleerimine on andnud
PR- ile värvingu, mis mõjutab suhtumist
erialasse tänaseni.
25. • Informatsioon - igakülgne info jõuab
avalikkuseni. Tööle hakkasid infosekretärid.
IvyLedbetter Lee oli esimene tõeliselt edukas
praktik. Tema “DeclarationofPrinciples” järgi ei
ole avalikkus ega manipuleeritud.
Suhtekorralduse eesmärk on faktidele
tuginedes informeerida üldsust.
26. • Kahepoolne heatahtlik suhtumine - tööle
hakkavad suhtekorralduskonsultandid. Oluline
koht tegevuses antakse uuringutele. Uuritakse
avalikku arvamust. Avaliku arvamuse
uuringute analüüs on aluseks edasise
strateegia koostamisele. Oma eesmärke
sõnastades arvestatakse avaliku arvamusega.
Oluliseks saab sotsiaalse vastutuse
tähtsustamine.
27. • Rakendub põhimõte, et see, mida räägid, peab
olema tõsi. Tähelepanu pööratakse sisemistele
sihtgruppidele, areneb sisekommunikatsioon,
tekivad sisemised ajalehed. Kliendisuhtlus
muutub avatumaks, oma eesmärke
tutvustatakse kliendilehtedes.
28. • Suhtekorraldajad ei muretsenud niipalju
kriisikommunikatsiooni oskuste arendamise,
kuivõrd plaanipärase suhtekorralduse pärast.
Organisatsiooni eesmärkide saavutamiseks pole
vaja mitte niipalju kriisikommunikatsiooni,
kuivõrd just plaanipärast ja pidevat tegevust.
Firmad hakkasid toetama oma töötajaid, kes
osalesid erinevates organisatsioonides, sest nii oli
nende firma esindatud paljudes
organisatsioonides.
29. • Avalikkus peab olema täielikult informeeritud.
Avalikkussuhete korraldamise printsiibid: tõde,
ausus ja kõigi faktide teatavakstegemine.
30. Rahvusvaheline Suhtekorraldajate
assotsiatsioon (IPRA)
• IPRA asutati mais 1955. Aastal viie maa
suhtekorraldusprofessionaalide liiduna. Liidu
asutasid suhtekorraldajad
Inglismaalt, Prantsusmaalt, Hollandist, Norrast
ja USAst. IPRA on tunnustatud ÜRO
konsultaatiivorganisatsiooniks, UNESCO
konsultatiivorganisatsiooniks.
31. Nemad olid esimesed IPRA liikmed
Eestist:
Ulli Sats, Kaja Tampere ja Aune Past.
Ulli Sats ja Aune Past olid aastaid ka IPRA
nõukogu liikmed.
32. Eesti suhtekorralduse areng
• Eesti ühiskonnas toimusid muutused 1980test aastatest.
See, mis toimus Eestis suhtekorralduse nime kordagi
nimetamata, oli ehe näide survegruppide tegevusest,
kommunikatsioonijuhtimisest, sümbolkommunikatsiooni
teadlikust kasutamisest.
• 1986-1987 aasta fosforiidisõda on oma olemuselt
survegruppide aktsioon, suhtekorralduslik tegevus oma
õiguste eest seismisel.
• Rahvussümboolika kasutuselevõtt.17. juunil 1988
Lauluväljakul Rahvarinde esimene100 000 osavõtjaga
meeleavaldus.
• 23.augustil 1989 Balti kett.
33. • Suhtekorraldusega hakkasid tegelema nii ajakirjanikud kui
turundusinimesed. Õigupoolest ühinesid suhtekorralduse
kui uue ja põneva teema ümber ühiskonnas erinevates
valdkondades aktiivsed inimesed.
• Tartus tegutses Kolme Krooni Klubi. Klubi liikmed hankisid
suhtekorraldusalaseid väljaandeid ja raamatuid ning
tutvustasid neid üksteisele. Koos organiseeriti nii
eneseharimist, kui veedeti vaba aega. Klubi tegutses
aktiivselt 1995-1997. aastatel. Koos tutvuti maailmas
levivate kommunikatsioonisuundadega, hinnati üksteise
tegevust, prooviti sõnastada, mis on suhtekorraldus. Klubis
käibis oma raha: kolmekroonine.
34. Eesti Suhtekorraldajate Liit
• Suhtekorraldajate liidu loomise ettevalmistust
alustati 1995. aastal. Ettevalmistavas grupis
olid Aune Past, Kai-Riin Meri, KailiHendrikson,
Kaja Tampere, SveaTalving, Peep Mühls ja Ivo
Rull.
35. • 29. mai 1996. asutati Tartus Eesti
Suhtekorraldajate Liit. Nagu näha kutsest, olid
erialainimesed omavahel nii tuttavad, et
nimedele polnud vaja tiitleid lisada. Olgu siis
siin kirjas, et EPRA asutamise kohtumisel
valgustasid suhtekorralduse hetkeseisu

38. • Asutajaid oli 42 inimest. EPRA on erialaliit, mis
koondab valdkonna spetsialiste. Liit töötas välja
eestikeelse terminoloogia ja eetikakoodeksi. Liidu
põhikirja on tehtud üldkoosolekutel
muudatusi, mis viivad liidu tegevuse kooskõlla
ühiskonna muutustega.
• Liit toimib organisatsioon kvaliteedigarantiina.
Liidu liikmeks saab ainult kahe liikme soovitusega.
39. • 2000. aastast tegeldakse Kutsestandardite
väljatöötamisega. Kutsestandardite
väljatöötamist juhib EPRA juhatuse poolt Ivo
Rull, kaasatud on Tartu ülikooli meedia ja
kommunikatsiooni osakond kui Baltimaade
erialakompetentsi keskus.

42. Koolitus
• Alguspäevadest alates viis liit läbi erialakoolitust.
Alustasime seminare erinevates firmades, kus
tutvusime firma suhtekorraldusega. Tavakohaselt pidas
iga võõrustaja ka mingi teoreetilise ettekande.
• Rahvusvahelise mastaabi sai koolitus 2000. aasta mais.
27. mail toimus Hansapanga konverentsikeskuse Balti
saalis rahvusvaheliselt tunnustatud
suhtekorraldusspetsialisti dr. Marieta Vosi loeng teemal
"Muutused suhtekorraldaja elukutses".
43. • 31. mail 2001 esines EPRA 5. aastapäeva
loenguga IPRA president AlasdairSutherland.
Loengu teemad olid:
• rahvusvahelise suhtekorraldusturu trendid
• suhtekorralduse areng maailmas
• globaalse turu areng ja selle mõju
rahvusvahelistele kompaniidele, brändidele ja
suhtekorralduskampaaniatele
• viimistletud sihipäraste kampaaniate ja
suhtekorralduse tulemuste mõõtmise meetodite
arendamise vajadus.
45. • EPRA kutsestandardite töörühm kogunes esimest korda
Rahvusraamatukogus Tallinnas reedel, 20. aprillil 2001. kell 16.
Töörühma moodustasid Ulli Sats, Aune Past, Peep Mühls ja Ivo Rull.
Ühises arutelus leiti, et:
1.Aeg suhtekorraldaja kutsestandardi väljatöötamisks EPRA poolt on
küps;
2. Kutsestandardi miinimumnõudeiks peaks olema kõrghariduse
olemasolu, minimaalselt 2-aastane erialane tööstaaazh ning
soovitused EPRA tegevliikmetelt. Lisaks kaaluti ka erialaste
akadeemiliste loengute kuulamise arvestamist;
3. Kutsestandardite väljatöötamisel ja vastaval atesteerimisel võiks
teha kööstööd Kaubandus-Tööstuskojaga;
46. •
4. Kutsestandardite rakendamine võiks toimuda
etapiviisiliselt. Esimeses etapis, nö 0-variandina võiks
väljatöötatud kutsestandardite kohaselt atesteerida EPRA
liikmed;
5. Lepiti kokku, et alusdokumendi kutsestandardite
väljatöötamiseks valmistab 11. maiks ette Aune Past;
6. Töörühm jätkab alusdokumendi täiendamist eesmärgiga
esitada kutsestandardite põhimõtted ning võimalikud
atesteerimisprotseduuride kirjeldused 31. mail toimuvale
EPRA üldkogule;
