Behind the scenes look at initial color and print direction for CALIA by Carrie Underwood.
As you can see below, images provided a lot of inspiration for color stories.
The next few pages are examples of our large Story Boards, to show direction.
We would have them split by Quarters - so there was a flow of when things would hit.
Color / Mood Story - trend book
Color / Mood Story - trend book
Here is an example of a
sublimated-ombre print I
created. With
Sublimation.......Color and
Artwork would overlap,
causing my approval system
to be subjective and
flexible.
Sending factories detailed
visuals with comments and
sending print outs sped up
the process.
The following is not career work, but personal views on:
A learning process

Activewear and Global Fashion
Color Trend / Stories
How different ways of creating Art, taught me color
“So far, I feel Without
Walls by Urban
Outfitters does a fresh
take on color and
pushing the
boundaries like Nike
and Adidas by Stella
Mccartney have in the
past.
I can see this as a fall studio story.
“Neutrals are very
important to me. They
create harmony and add
sophistication. Although
I’ve been advised in the
past not to use nuetrals
as key colors (as they
aren’t athletic), I
disagreed and could
never fully ignore them.”
This could be used for a small run story.
Fashion is being influenced
more and more by activewear.
I think they are finally seeing
that it’s exciting and the future.
On the flip side, activewear is
also taking a lot of color
inspiration from the runway.
Say goodbye to the hyper
brights...
ALTHOUGH..
CALM
DOWN
I found myself being drawn
towards shades of
MARSALA (I didn’t know the
name at the time). Oranges
and Red are very difficult to
get right, as it can clash with
nude skin. Marsala ended up
being the 2015 pantone of the
year. Adidas by Stella
Mccartney used it quite a bit in
her recent collection.
This could be a great
compression 70’s inspired
color story, especially in
prints. I could see it for
womens fall/winter.
Painting taught me another
angle of how to approach
color, in a physical way.
The following are a few
paintings I’ve done.
And lastly, on the digital side, this color picker in Adobe programs has shown me the vast
range of what a hue can actually be....
