An adverb is a word that describes a verb.
An adverb tells how, when, or where the
verb happens.
Many adverbs that tell how end with the letters ly.
example:
Joan painted slowly. Slowly describes how Joan
painted.
When you compare two actions, the adverb will often end
with the letters er or est.
example: Birds fly higher than insects. Higher
describes where the birds fly.
Airplanes fly highest of all. Highest describes to what
extent the airplanes fly.

try making a question, for which the answer is
the word. If the question uses how, where or
when, then the word is probably an adverb.
For Example:
        Word in context         Question          Adverb?
1.  Junko plays tennis aggressively.
How does Junko play tennis?
Yes  uses HOW.
2.  They have a small house.
What kind of house do they have?
No  uses WHAT KIND of, so this
         is an adjective.
