The assault on Delhi, a well-fortified area, defended by a committed force at least four to five times
the assault force and armed with greater number and caliber of guns was an extraordinary feat. The
assault was against conventional military practice which lays out a ratio of 3:1 for assault and defense
forces in urban warfare. The British force (Comprising 23% Britishers but 100% officers) lost roughly
20% of its force, 1170 men (Killed or wounded including 66 officers) on 14th September 1857, the day
of the assault to capture roughly a mile of the city ramparts. The stakes were extremely high, now or
never for both sides. Delhi was the focal point for the rest of India and success was crucial to both
sides. The British forces recaptured Delhi on 20th September, 1857 despite a heroic and valiant
defense put up by the Nationalist Indian defenders.
What lessons does this battle have for us, let us advance and learn.
The study of past battles prepares Officers and men alike for situations they might face in

We walk over the ridge- the stronghold of the British from 8th
June 1857 till date of assault 14th
September from Pul Bangash Metro Station and Cover Mutiny Memorial, Hindu Rao Hospital, Pir
Ghaib, Khooni Khan Lake, Flag Staff Tower, Mosque on ridge, Bell of Arms.

Take Metro from DU for Jahangirpuri to see the site of Battle of Badlee kee Serai inside the Fruit
Market- Azadpur Subzi Mandi.
Walk 3 Kms through some chaotic places and even through a forest where you might see small wild
life monkeys, peacocks, mongoose etc.
Dress code Full Sleeves Shirt and Jeans and Sneakers. Cap, shades, Camera and Binoculars are
optional. You are responsible for your belongings. Minimum group size is 3 and maximum 10-12. First
come first serve basis and if need be a new walk can also be organized on another Sunday.
